Guilford Football Defeats Harding, 56-6; Multiple Victories for Every Other Club


Football

On Oct. 13, Guilford football hosted Harding and won 56-6. Tyler Hilgert went 11-for-17 with 270 passing yards and five touchdowns. On the rushing side, Caden Hillier had 11 carries for 118 yards and one touchdown, and Kevin Smith recorded four carries for 32 yards. Hilgert had three rushes for 20 yards with one touchdown. Alex Tafro (six carries, 68 yards) and Alex Uzzo (two carries, 12 yards) also contributed for the Grizzlies’ ground game.

Jake Jahnige had five receptions for 109 yards at two touchdowns, while Trevor Ridley had two receptions for 45 yards. Other contributors included Jaco Corso (one reception, 51 yards, one touchdown), Brady Hallihan (one reception, nine yards, one touchdown) and Joe Tafro (two receptions, 51 yards, one touchdown).

Boys’ Soccer

On Oct. 9, Grizzlies boys’ soccer hosted North Haven and won 2-0. The goal scorers for Guilford were Andres Gutierrez (assisted by Owen Medvecky) and Medvecky (assisted by Wyatt Sprenkle). Jameson Benben and Anthony Malatesta each recorded two saves in goal.

The team traveled to Old Lyme on Oct. 11 and won 3-1. Gutierrez scored two goals in the contest, and Andrew Jarrin scored one. Medvecky and Ian Campaigne each recorded an assist. Benben and Malatesta each had two saves.

Girls’ Soccer

The Guilford girls’ soccer team hosted Lauralton Hall on Oct. 10 and grabbed a 6-0 win. On Oct. 13, the Grizzlies traveled to East Haven and won 7-0.

Field Hockey

Grizzlies field hockey traveled to Branford on Oct. 10 and won 3-2. Two days later, Guilford traveled to East Lyme and won 6-1. On Oct. 14, Sacred Heart Academy came to town and Guilford claimed a 1-0 victory.

Girls’ Volleyball

Girls’ volleyball played three matches last week. On Oct. 9, the team traveled to Hamden and won 3-1. On Oct. 11, the team played host to Career Magnet and won 3-0. Guilford ended the week on Oct. 13, when they traveled to Sacred Heart Academy and triumphed by a 3-2 final.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

On Oct. 10, Guilford girls’ swimming and diving beat Lyman Hall 100-83. Sophomore Aislin Cohen took first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.48. Junior Isabel Torello came in first place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:23.71. Senior Sorina Cheng won both her events. She swam the 50 freestyle in 26.78, and the 100 backstroke in 1:03.82. Junior Kate Young won the 100 freestyle (1:00.56). Young, Torello, freshman Abigail Fernandez, and freshman Muiriel Rader won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:52.79. Fernandez, Cheng, Rader, and Cohen had the fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay (4:05.81) in exhibition.

On Oct. 13, the Grizzlies defeated the co-op, which consisted of Old Lyme, Valley Regional, and Old Saybrook, by a score of 70-55. The 200-yard medley relay, swam by Fernandez, Cohen, Young, and Rader, took first place with a time of 2:04.86. Young came in first place in the 200 freestyle (2:13.40). Junior Taylor Nowak won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:35.53. Torello took first place in the 50 freestyle (27.81) and posted the fastest time in the 100 freestyle (59.42) in exhibition.

Cohen took first place in the 100 butterfly (1:05.78) and posted the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.74) in exhibition. For the first time this season, two swimmers (Young and junior Clara Matos da Cruz) had the fastest time in the 500 freestyle and tied in exhibition (5:53.34). Cohen, Torello, freshman Hannah Brown, and Matos da Cruz posted the fastest time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:53.50). Fernandez had the fastest time in the 100 backstroke (1:10.06) in exhibition. Torello, Young, Rader, and Fernandez also had the fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay (4:04.41) in exhibition.
