Guilford Girls’ Soccer Records Three Wins, Football Takes a Loss

Football

Guilford football played host to Hillhouse on Oct. 6 and fell 20-14. Tyler Hilgert went 16/33 with 184 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. On the rushing side, Caden Hillier had 17 carries for 61 yards, while Kevin Smith had 14 carries for 43 yards. Hilgert recorded seven carries for 41 yards, and scored a rushing touchdown. Alex Tafro had one rush for seven yards.

Jake Jahnige had five receiving for 86 yards, Joe Tafro had four receiving for 29 yards, and Trevor Ridley had three receiving for 33 yards. Hillier added two receiving for 18 yards, and Brady Hallihan had two receiving for 22 yards.

Boys’ Soccer

On Oct. 2, Guilford boys’ soccer hosted Daniel Hand and tied 2-2. Nico Jarrin scored both goals for the Grizzlies, with assists from Wyatt Sprenkle and Danny Perez. Jameson Benben and Anthony Malatesta each recorded one save.

On Oct. 5, Guilford traveled to Xavier and lost 1-0. Goalie Jameson Benben recorded three saves in the game.

Girls’ Soccer

The Guilford girls’ soccer team hosted Daniel Hand on Oct. 2 and won 1-0. The next day, the team traveled to Sacred Heart Academy and lost 4-2. On Oct. 5, the Grizzlies traveled to Branford and won 2-1. Two days later to finish off the week, the team took to the road again, this time traveling to Career/Hillhouse, and won 6-0.

Field Hockey

Guilford field hockey grabbed a commanding 8-0 win at Mercy on Oct. 3 to open the week. Then, on Oct. 5, the Grizzlies hosted Cheshire and won 2-1. Two days later, the team traveled to Norwalk and fell 2-1.

Girls’ Volleyball

On Oct. 2, girls’ volleyball traveled to Daniel Hand and won 3-0. Two days later, Guilford hit the road to Cheshire and lost 3-1.

On Oct. 6, West Haven came to town and the Grizzlies earned a 3-0 victory.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team battled with Cheshire on Sept. 26, a meet that ended in Guilford’s first loss of the season with a final score of 101-77. Sophomore Aislin Cohen took first place in the 50 yard freestyle (25.25) and the 100 freestyle (55.54). Junior Jordyn Gould took first place in the 1M diving with a score of 239.55.

Several of the girls made state qualifying times in the contest, as well. Freshman Muiriel Rader qualified in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.83. Senior Isabella Blanco qualified in the 100 fly with a time of 1:11.39. There were also three swimmers that had their in-season best times at the meet. Freshman Abigail Fernandez swam the 100 yard backstroke in 1:09.59, sophomore Liana Clune swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.13, and junior Zoe Maitre also had a best time in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.75).

On Oct. 2, Guilford came back and picked up another win when they faced off against North Haven, defeating the Nighthawks by a score of 92-81. The meet started off with the 200 yard medley relay, in which Guilford took first place with a time of 2:03.46. The relay team consisted of junior Evelyn Bertolini, junior Zoe Maitre, junior Taylor Nowak, and junior Amy Shi.

Fernandez won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:15.09. Cohen came in first for the 200 individual medley (2:26.62) and the 500 freestyle, with a state qualifying time of 5:35.98. Junior Isabel Torello won the 50 freestyle (27.37) and 100 butterfly (1:10.70). Gould won the 1M diving with her highest score of the season so far of 247.95.

Senior Sorina Cheng qualified for states in both of her events. She won the 100 yard freestyle (58.74) and also posted the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.84). Cheng, Torello, Fernandez, and Cohen had the fastest time in the 200 freestyle relay in exhibition (1:47.61). Bertolini had the fastest time in the 100 backstroke, with a time of 1:14.31. Rader, junior Kate Young, Torello, and Cohen posted the fastest time for the 400 freestyle relay in exhibition (4:02.17).

Young qualified for states in the 50 freestyle (27.67) and the 100 freestyle (1:00.56). Freshman Hannah Brown had a best time in the 50 freestyle (30.92), while freshman Sophia Chicarilli posted her best time in the 100 backstroke (1:14.51). Junior Sasha Armster also posted her best time in the 100 backstroke (1:15.14).

On Oct. 5, Guilford defeated Hand with a score of 96.5-86.5. Torello won the 200 yard freestyle, with an in-season best time of 2:01.30, and she also won the 500 freestyle (5:30.97). Cheng took first in the 200 individual medley (2:25.59) and the 100 backstroke (1:04.47). Cohen won the 50 freestyle (25.44) and the 100 freestyle (56.03). Gould won the 1M diving competition with a score of 246.95.

Cheng, Rader, Torello, and Cohen won the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:46.56. Junior Clara Matos Cruz, Young, Torello, and Cohen had the fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay in exhibition. Armster qualified for states in the 100 backstroke (1:13.20) and Nowak also qualified in the 100 freestyle (1:02.12). The following swimmers had in-season best times in their events at the meet: Young in the 200 individual medley, freshman Gina Dong in the 100 breaststroke, senior Sofia Tian, junior Amy Shi, and freshman Hannah Brown, who all had lifetime bests in the 50 yard freestyle. Brown also had a best time in the 100 freestyle.

In a previous meet vs. Amity, several Guilford swimmers qualified for states. Torello qualified in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Cheng qualified in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. Young qualified in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, while Cohen qualified in the 50 freestyle. Tian qualified in the 100 butterfly and Matos Cruz qualified in the 500 freestyle. Fernandez qualified in the 100 backstroke, and Clune qualified in the 100 breaststroke.
