Guilford Girls’ Swimming and Diving Wins First Three Meets, Girls’ Soccer Grabs a Win

Football

Guilford football hosted RHAM on Sept. 22 and dominated the competition, 50-19.

Boys’ Soccer

The Guilford boys’ soccer team hosted West Haven on Sept. 21 and won 1-0. Owen Medvecky recorded the lone goal for the Grizzlies on an assist by Daniel Perez. Jameson Benben recorded three saves in net, and Anthony Malatesta had two saves.

Then on Sept. 23, the team played host to Cheshire and ended in a 1-1 tie. For Guilford, Wyatt Sprenkle scored, assisted by Medvecky. Benben (three saves) and Malatesta (one save) manned the net.

Girls’ Soccer

Guilford girls’ soccer continued its winning ways, grabbing a 6-0 win over East Haven at home on Sept. 18 in its lone game of the week.

Field Hockey

Grizzlies field hockey traveled to Amity on Sept. 19, winning a 3-2 game. Then on Sept. 21, Guilford hosted Hamden and won 4-2. Payton Root had three goals and one assist for the week. Hailey Farace scored two goals, and Tania Evans and freshman Zoe Tsoukanelis each recorded one.

Girls’ Volleyball

On Sept. 18, the Guilford girls’ volleyball team traveled to Career Magnet and won 3-0. Then on Sept. 20, the Grizzlies hit the road to face Lyman Hall and won 3-0 again. On Sept. 22, they hosted Sacred Heart Academy and fell 3-2.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team competed against East Haven on Sept. 12 at home. The Grizzlies posted a 100-59 victory over the East Haven co-op. Guilford’s 200 medley relay of senior Sorina Cheng, junior Isabel Torello, freshman Muiriel Rader, and sophomore Aislin Cohen finished in first place with a time of 2:00.56. Cheng came in first place in the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.86) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.22), making state cuts in both events. Cohen also made states in both of her events. She finished first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:24.19) and also recorded the fastest time in the 100 yard backstroke (1:06.23) for the exhibition event.

Torello took first in the 50-yard freestyle (26.64) and recorded the fastest time for the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.28) in the exhibition event. These times qualified Torello for states, as well. Junior Jordyn Gould took first place in the 1-meter diving competition by recording a total of 230.55 points, breaking the Guilford High School record (which was set by Gould last year), and she also qualified for states.

Rader won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.36, giving her a qualifying time for states. Also qualifying for states was Clara Matos da Cruz, who took the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:00.63. The 200 freestyle relay, swam by senior Isabella Blanco, senior Sofia Tian, Cheng, and Matos da Cruz, took first place with a time of 1:53.03. Rader, Torello, junior Kate Young, and Cohen posted the fastest time for the 400-yard freestyle relay in the exhibition event.

In their second meet of the season on Sept. 18, the Grizzlies beat Amity 98-88 in a hard-fought meet. Junior Torello took first place in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.29) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:34.03). Senior Cheng won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:18.54. Junior Gould took first place in the diving competition with a score of 237.60 points. Sophomore Cohen came in first place in the 100-yard freestyle (55.44).

Cheng, freshman Abigail Fernandez, freshman Rader, and Cohen placed first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:46.52. The meet came down to the last event, which was the 400 medley relay. Guilford took first place with the team consisting of junior Matos da Cruz, junior Young, Torello, and Cohen posting a time of 3:55.42. The third-place team comprised of senior Tian, senior Isabella Blanco, junior Evelyn Bertolini, and junior Taylor Nowak (4:16.38) also helped produce valuable points for the Grizzlies.

On Sept. 22, Guilford hosted Sheehan and won 96-85. The 200-yard medley relay took first place with a time of 2:03.66 and included senior Sorina Cheng, junior Isabel Torello, freshman Muiriel Rader, and senior Isabella Blanco. Sophomore Aislin Cohen took first place in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.06) and posted the fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke exhibition event (1:17.99). She also qualified for states in both events.

Torello swam the 200-yard individual medley (2:23.48) and the 100-yard freestyle (57.74) and took first place in both of those events. These times also qualified Torello for states. Cheng won the 50-yard freestyle (26.60) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.39), qualifying her for states in both events. Junior Jordyn Gould took first place in the diving with a score of 236.90. Rader finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:09.32, qualifying her for states. She also qualified for states in the 100 free with a time of 59.65.

Several other swimmers qualified for states in the meet. Freshman Abigail Fernandez qualified in the 200-yard individual medley (2:33.35) and the 500 free (6:02.08). Junior Evelyn Bertolini qualified in the 100 backstroke (1:13.08), and sophomore Lianna Clune qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:22.16.
