Branford Football Grabs a Win, Girls’ Volleyball Wins Three Straight

Football

The Branford football team played host to Hartford Public on Sept. 22 and won 20-14. The Hornets had 38 total rushes for 242 yards. Nathan Florio had 14 carries for 135 yards with one touchdown on a 55-yard run. Akiel Lomotey rushed 18 times for 87 yards with one touchdown on a 29-yard run. Quarterback Scott Penner went 7-of-10 for 58 yards and one touchdown on a 37-yard pass to Cole Snider.

Boys’ Soccer

Boys’ soccer fell 6-0 to Daniel Hand on the road on Sept. 19 before winning 5-0 vs. East Haven at home on Sept. 21. On Sept. 23, the Hornets traveled to Shelton and lost 1-0.

Girls’ Soccer

The Branford girls’ soccer team played host to Hamden on Sept. 19, winning the game 7-0. Two days later, the Hornets traveled to Sacred Heart Academy and lost 2-1.

Field Hockey

Branford field hockey hit the road to Mercy on Sept. 15 and won 4-0. Branford’s goals were scored by Mia d’Amuri, Tate Jones, Jessica Radziunas, and Aliza Giordano. Giordano also recorded an assist in the contest. Julia Bozzi and Lilly Panuccio manned the net in the shutout. The Hornets also received excellent performances from Allison McCarthy, Sofia Taranto, and Randee Chobian.

The Hornets then traveled to Cheshire for a competitive matchup on Sept. 19, losing by the score 1-0. Julia Bozzi recorded six saves in goal, while Taranto, Jones, and Jess Radziunas all had strong performances.

On Sept. 23, Branford traveled to Newtown and took a 1-0 loss. Bozzi recorded seven saves in goal, and there were also strong performances from Radziunas, Jones, and Caitlin Reilley.

Girls’ Volleyball

Branford girls’ volleyball started the week off strong, collecting a 3-0 shutout win at home vs. Wilton on Sept. 20. Two days later, the team traveled to Mercy and won 3-0. On Sept. 23, the Hornets played host to Lyman Hall and grabbed another 3-0 victory.

Cross Country

On Sept. 19, the Branford boys’ and girls’ cross country teams hosted a meet vs. Cheshire, Hamden, and Hillhouse. The girls’ team scored 69 points, and the boys scored 94 points.

On the girls’ side, Violet Marrandino came in 7th place with a time of 19:32. She was followed by Sarit Juela-Garcia in 11th (20:29) and Avery Clouse in 22nd (22:43). Ella Stone was closely behind in 23rd (22:43.5), and Djamilla Toukor (26.12) came in 30th. Cheyenne Wilson rounded out the top six in 36th place with a time of 30:36.

For the boys, Sam Coppola took 15th place (17:30), David Regan claimed 19th place (17:58), and David Buckley was 29th (19:28). In 31st place was Nolan Weted (19:34) and Supreme Shrestha (20:34) got 34th place. Paul Lesyk finished in 35th place with a time of 20:37.

“This was a better meet for the girls, as we are short on depth,” said Head Coach Kevin Connell. “It was good to see everyone competing at home. The boys will continue to improve as the season continues. They need a consistent effort from everyone in order to succeed.”
