H-K Boys’ Soccer, Girls’ Volleyball Open the Season with Wins
Girls’ Volleyball
Girls’ volleyball hosted Portland in the season opener on Sept. 7, when they recorded a 3-0 shutout win.
Boys’ Soccer
On Sept. 9, H-K boys’ soccer faced Coginchaug at home to open the season and grabbed a 5-1 win. Eli Hamman scored one goal, Phin Merriam recorded one goal and one assist, and Finn O’Hanlon scored a goal. Cole Merriam had one goal and three assists, James Marchetti added a score, and Tristen Edwards had an assist.
Football
On Sept. 9, the Haddam-Killingworth football team opened the season by hosting Morgan/Old Saybrook/Westbrook. The Cougars fell 44-20. For scoring, Wyatt Solosky ran in a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter, as well as in the third quarter. Josh Frith also recorded a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Cross Country
On Sept. 9, the H-K boys’ and girls’ cross country teams began their 2023 season, as they traveled to Somers, New York to compete in the Somers Big Red Invitational against 50 teams from New York.
The boys’ team raced well on the challenging 3.1 mile course, overcoming the heat and extreme humidity to place first overall as a team in the Division 3 race with 57 points, defeating the 16 other teams from New York in the contest. The boys were led by junior co-captain Jack Cozean, who crossed the line in a time of 17:10 to place fourth in the race. He was quickly followed by teammate and sophomore Daniel McCourt, who ran 17:11 to place fifth. Next to cross the line were senior co-captain Luke Hedges in 13th (18:02), junior Matt Lara in 17th (18:13) and sophomore Cash Smigel in 18th (18:13).
The girls’ team, missing two of their top runners, also had a strong start to their season, as they placed second as a team in the Division 3 race with 72 points. They were led by sophomore Grace Mitchell who, despite taking a wrong turn, still placed sixth in the race with a time of 21:34. Following her was senior Sydney Adelberg in 10th (21:56), sophomore Delaney Aronson in 20th (23:22), sophomore Julia Downing in 24th (23:55) and sophomore Amelia Riggs in 30th (24:18).
