07/10/2023 01:25 PMPlayers of the Deep River Horseshoe League were wishing for any breeze as they got their first taste of summer in Week 10 — heat and humidity. They were all doing their best to stay hydrated and take advantage of any shade when they were not tossing shoes.
Cardinals’ Kris Toohey led his team to a 5-1 win over the Rangers with his season-best 144-point series, padding their first place lead. Kris was the leading scorer for “A” division players. For the second week in a row, the Rangers had a victory snatched from them. Cards’ Mike Beckwith tossed four points in the bottom of the 12th box to give the Cards a one-point win. Mike Beckwith’s 86-point series was a season-high, and he was the third leading “C” division scorer. The Cardinals topped 300 points for the second week in a row at 302.
Having scored 349 points last week, Bill Beckwith’s Red Sox were hoping for another high-scoring week, while Sheryl Serviss’s Tigers were just shy of scoring 300 points as a team, and they were hoping to continue their climb up the standings. The teams ended the night, each having scored 261 points. Servis bested Bill Beckwith 127-114 and was the third leading “A” division scorer. Sox’s John Durinick did his best with a 111-point series and was the top scorer for “B” division players. The Tigers won 4-2 and are in fourth place.
The White Sox took over the lead in overall team scoring, as they topped 300 points for the second week in a row with 313. The team is the most efficient scoring team in the league. Each match, there is a total of 576 shoes tossed, and the White Sox managed to get 199 in for points (34.5%). The league average is 26.5%. White Sox’s Bob Beckwith was the leading “C” division scorer with a 100-point series. He has been the “C” division leading scorer in six of the nine weeks he has played. They swept the Reds, who suffered their second sweep in a row. With the 6-0 win, the White Sox moved into fifth place.
Yankees’ Frank Jolly has been leading the team in scoring over the past couple of weeks, but Todd Nuhn took the honors this week, leading the team to a 4-2 win over the Cubs to stay in third place, two games ahead of the Tigers.
Going into the night, the Royals and Braves were tied for fifth place. The Royals were unable to put up the scoring numbers of last week, and the Braves took advantage, winning 4.5 — 1.5 to take over sixth place, with the Royals dropping down to seventh.
Other leading scorers this week included Giants’ Mike Zanelli Sr. with 142 points, the second-leading scorer for “A” division, Cubs’ Ted Dubay with 110 points, the second-leading scorer for “B” division, and Pirates’ Brady Miller with 106 points, the No. 3 scorer for “B” division. For “C” division, Orioles’ Paul Chrystal scored 90 points as the second-leading scorer.
