Deep River Horseshoe League Sees Many Season-Highs
With summer officially here, the Deep River Horseshoe League is now officially past the halfway mark in their season. The weather was perfect as the teams experienced their best scoring of the season, with 16 players having their best games or series. The Tigers swept the Reds, the Red Sox had a big scoring night, the Giants came within a point of a sweep of the Rangers, Tigers’ Susan Feaster hit the century mark and Jolly led the Yankees over the Pirates. Four teams topped 300 points.
Kris Toohey’s Cardinals held onto first place with a 5-1 win over Tony Cutone’s Angels. Kris Toohey posted four games in the mid-30s for his best series of the season (139 points, 38 ringers and 9 doubles) and teammates Dennis Goodrich and Mike Beckwith had series that equaled or came close to a season-best as they rolled up 301 points, 70 ringers and 10 doubles.
Todd Nuhn’s Yankees continued their success using Frank Jolly’s “Deadeye” shoes. Frank was the leading “B” division scorer with a 115 point series. The Yankees posted a 4-2 win and are alone in third place.
Mike Zanelli’s Giants made short work against Joe Heery’s Rangers. In game three, Giants’ Gary Stevens tossed two points in the bottom of the 12th to earn the tie game, snatching the Rangers’ lone chance for a win. If he had tossed a ringer, the Giants would have had a sweep. With the 5.5-0.5 win the Giants are alone in second place.
Tigers’ Sheryl Serviss has been on a scoring surge over the last three weeks, increasing her season-best series each week. This week she was the third leading “A” scorer with a 145 point series. The Tigers played the Reds, who rank as one of the top three scoring teams in the league, but it wasn’t their night as they had trouble finding the stake. Tigers’ Susan Feaster, in her second season, had a 100 point series and a 32 point game (all personal best scores) and she was the top “C” scorer. With the sweep, the Tigers moved up another two spots in the standings to fourth.
Red Sox’s Bill Beckwith was the leading “A” division scorer as he put up the second highest series of the season (161 points, 47 ringers and 9 doubles). In addition, Matt Valentin was a sub on the Red Sox and is the youngest player in the league at 16. He had a personal best 77 point series. John Durinick added a 111 point series as the Red Sox totaled 349 points, 88 ringers and 13 doubles. The point and doubles are the league’s season highs. The Red Sox won 5-1.
Royals’ John Sciacca has had some up and down scoring weeks and this was an “up” week. His 151 point series was second amongst “A” division players, but the highlight of the night was his 51 point, 15 ringers, 6 doubles game. His six doubles is tied for league lead and his 51 points had him three points shy of having the most points in a game. John’s teammates John Hutra (93 points) and Kyle Wilson (with a personal best 75 point series) contributed to the team’s score of 323 points.
Frank Rausch’s White Sox rebounded from a poor showing last week, as the team scored 306 points to defeat the Rockies 4-2. Frank had his season best series at 119 points and Bob Beckwith’s 85 point series was the second leading “C” division scorer.
Other leading scorers included Cubs’ Ted Dubay and Red Sox’s John Durinick, who tied for second with a 111 point series for “B” Division. Mets’ Howie Fisher’s 78 point series was the third leading scorer for “C” Division.
