Cardinals Increase First-Place Lead in Deep River Horseshoe League

It was a fun Week Eight for the Deep River Horseshoe League, as Kris Toohey’s Cardinals took advantage of Mark Goodale’s last place Marlins to increase their first place lead to two games. Kris Toohey’s 133-point series was the third-best among “A” division players, and his teammate Dennis Goodrich had his best series of the season (96 points, 17 ringers, and two doubles) to lead the team to a 4-2 win.

Frank Rausch’s White Sox were poised to move closer to the Cardinals if they could defeat Todd Nuhn’s Yankees. Todd Nuhn decided to change the shoes the team would pitch. He went with Frank Jolly’s “Deadeyes,” and that changed the whole dynamics of the match. Frank lit up the statistics with his best series of the season and best since 2019. His 140 points, 34 ringers, and five doubles were tops for the “B” division players. With the 5-1 win, the Yankees moved into a tie for second place with the Giants. The White Sox had trouble scoring and were 40 points below their team’s season average. However, Bob Beckwith did manage to take the No. 2 spot for “C” division players with a 77-point series.

Mike Zanelli Sr.’s Giants were hoping to take over first place, but Mike Didomizio’s Rockies had other ideas. The Giants won each of the first two games by three points before the Rockies duo of Warren Bellows and Jim Weselcouch had their own three-point win in Game Three. In Game Four, it was Jim’s two ringers in the last two boxes to give the Rockies their second win. The teams split the last two games for a 3-3 split. Mike Zanelli Sr. maintained his lead as the league’s top scorer with a 146-point series and was the top “A” scorer for the evening. Warren Bellows finished with his season-best series (95 points, 23 ringers, and four doubles).

Braves’ Mike Zanelli Jr. had a record game during his match against Bob Cifaldi’s Mets. In Game Two, he had a league season-high 53 point, 15 ringer, five doubles game. The 53 points now puts him ahead of his dad for the season-high points in a game.

Tiger’s Sheryl Serviss had 47- and 41-point games on her way to a season-best series of 144 points and was the second leading scorer for “A” division players. With the 5-1 win over Dennis Allen’s Orioles, the Tigers jumped five spots in the standings to sixth place.

Other leading top scorers for “B” Division included No. 2 Rangers’ Dave Aldrich (111 points) and No. 3 Angels’ Gerry Hines (98 points). For “C” Division, No. 1 Reds’ Dave Atkinson had 82 points, and Cubs’ John O’Brien had 70 points.
