Cards, Giants Land in Second Place in Week Six of Deep River Horseshoe

The Deep River Horseshoe League has completed the first third of the season, and Todd Nuhn’s Yankees have resided in first place since the beginning. Giants’ Mike Zanelli Sr., Royals’ John Hutra, and White Sox’s Bob Beckwith have been the most dominating scorers for their respective “A,” “B,” and “C” divisions. The league welcomed their first high schooler, and at 16 years old, he has been one of the most reliable and steady players.

Todd Nuhn’s Yankees won 4-2 over the Marlins this past week to give them sole possession of first place again. They need to thank Mike Zanelli Jr.’s Braves, who split with Mike Zanelli Sr.’s Giants in the annual Father/Son duel. The split dropped the Giants into second place, one game behind the Yankees.

In the Father/Son duel, Mike Sr. came out on top, outscoring Mike Jr. 132-112. In their head-to-head matches, Sr. bested Jr. 3-1.

The Royals, who were tied for first going into the week, had to play without John Sciacca due to a shoulder injury. He, along with John Hutra, is one of the league’s most dynamic scoring duos. Matt Valentin filled in as a substitute. Hutra did his best to carry the team, but they came up short against the Orioles, who won 3.5-2.5. The Royals dropped to fourth place with the defeat. Hutra was tied with Reds’ Scott Allen Jr. for the leading “B” division player score, with a 110 series.

Kris Toohey’s Cards were only a half-game out of first as they took on Bob Cifaldi’s Mets, who were in a three-way tie for fifth place. The Cards ended the night with a 3.5-2.5 win and got a piece of second place next to the Giants, while the Mets slipped to a tie for eighth.

Tigers’ Sheryl Serviss’s 138 series took scoring honors for “A” division players, followed by Rockies’ Mike Didomizio’s 135 and Rangers’ Joe Heery’s 132.

Pirates’ Brady Miller was third in the “B” division, scoring with a 98 series behind John Hutra and Scott Allen Jr.’s 110.

White Sox’s Bob Beckwith and Dodgers’ Joe Machado dominated the statistics for the “C” players. Bob’s season-high series for 96 points, 18 ringers, and three doubles was the top scorer for the “C” division, followed by Joe’s season-high series for points (87) and ringers (18). He was the second-leading “C” scorer. In addition, Joe had a season-high game of 30 points. Orioles’ Paul Chrystal rounded out the top three scores for the “C” division.
