Hand Girls’ Tennis, Outdoor Track Win States; Boys’ Lacrosse Cruises to Semifinals
Baseball
Hand baseball entered the Class L State Tournament as the No. 25 seed, taking a first-round loss to No. 8 Bristol Central on May 30 by a score of 5-4.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Hand boys’ lacrosse cruised through the first two rounds of the Class M State Tournament as the No. 2 seed. In the first round on May 31, the Tigers faced No. 15 Watertown and won 16-2. Sam Sisk had one goal and five assists and Will Kleine had six goals and two assists. Jameson McParland Nick Lombardi each recorded three goals and three assists. Ale Cushing (one goal, one assist), Spiro Maniatis (one goal) and Tyler Naracci (one goal) also contributed. Jack Shay added an assist in the win.
On June 3, Hand faced 7th-seeded Farmington in the quarterfinals and won 18-9.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Hand girls’ lacrosse began state tournament play as the No. 2 seed in Class M. In the first round on May 30, the Tigers grabbed a commanding 15-9 win over No. 15 Ledyard. In the quarterfinals on June 2, Hand fell to No. 7 Brookfield by a score of 13-10 to wrap up the season.
Boys’ Tennis
Hand boys’ tennis began state tournament action last week as the No. 4 seed in Class M. On May 26 in the first round, the Tigers faced 13th-seeded Berlin and won 6-1. In the quarterfinal round on May 30, Hand went head-to-head with No. 5 East Lyme and recored a 7-0 shutout win. Hand’s season came to a close in the semifinals on May 31, when they got edged out by top-seeded Avon 7-0.
Girls’ Tennis
Hand girls’ tennis took care of business as they were crowned the champions in the Class M State Tournament. As the 9th-seeded team heading into play on May 26, they recorded a 6-1 first-round victory over No. 8 Valley Regional. Laila Haraj-Sai won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Loden Bradstreet won 6-0, 6-0, Antionette Lowy won 6-1, 6-0 and Emma Lee won 6-1, 6-1. The doubles pairing of Libby Rogers/Ella Helfrich won 6-1, 6-0 and Sofia Felgate/Mia Scott won 6-0, 6-4.
The Tigers went onto the quarterfinals on May 30, defeating No. 16 Rocky Hill 7-0. Haraj-Sai won 6-0, 6-0, Bradstreet won 6-0, 6-0, Lowy won 6-1, 6-2 and Lee won 6-2, 6-1. Rogers/Helfrich recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win, Teagan Ariyan/Juliana Jorens won 6-4, 6-0 and Felgate/Scott won 6-2, 6-1. In the semis on May 31, Hand grabbed a 6-1 victory over No. 5 Nonnewaug. Wins for singles inclued Haraj-Sai (6-1, 6-4), Bradstreet (6-1, 6-0), Lowy (6-0, 6-1) and Lee (6-0, 6-2). Rogers/Helfrich won at No. 2 doubles (6-0, 6-2) and Felgate/Scott won 4-6, 6-4, 15-13.
The Tigers squared off against No. 2 Stonington in the finals on June 1 and pulled off a 5-2 upset. All-SCC No. 1 singles player Haraj-Sai played the best match of her high school career and won 7-5, 6-3. Bradstreet at 2 singles capped off an amazing season by winning 6-4, 7-5. Lowy, in the deciding match for Hand, outlasted her opponent at 3 singles 6-3, 6-3. At 1 doubles, All-SCC duo Rogers/Helfrich won in a 3-set battle 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. 2 doubles pairing of Ariyan/Jorens overcame a tough semifinal loss the day before to win big for Hand in the finals 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). Also playing for Hand in the varsity lineup at finals were Lee (4 singles) and Felgate/Scott (3 doubles).
Girls’ Outdoor Track
The Hand girls’ outdoor track team won the Class MM State Championship on June 1, scoring 64 points as a squad. Grace Burton placed eighth in the 100 meters with a time of 13.19. In the 200 meters, Julia Coric placed seventh (26.16). Coric also took second in the 400 meters (58.07) with Vivian Glaser following in 10th (1:01.83). Jordan Kells took 10th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:30.22. Annecy Vlieks had a third-place finish in the 1600 (5:18.88) and won the 3200 (11:16.22).
Redmond Sullivan claimed second place in the discus (117-02) and Brooke Anderson claimed second in the high jump (4-10.00). Bella Portley finished 12th in the long jump (14-09.75). Alexis Kuszpa took seventh place in the pole vault (8-06.00) while Redmond Sullivan won the shot put (39-11.50). The girls’ 4x400 relay team of Alice Agovino, Vivian Glaser, Michelle Jiang and Julia Coric took first place (4:05.92).
Boys’ Outdoor Track
The Hand boys’ outdoor track team placed third as a squad at the Class MM Stste Championship on June 1, scoring a 63.5. Gavin Wagner placed eighth in the 100 (11.38) and Liam Elliott took fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (15.85). John Daniels was closely behind Elliott in seventh place with a time of 16.24. Gavin Wagner placed ninth in the 200 (22.96). In the 300 hurdles, Jonn Daniels took sixth (41.34) and Liam Elliott took ninth (42.03). Kyle Hoffman placed second in the 400 meters (49.13).
Nicholas Montana (4:24.72) and Harrison Grenier (4:27.42) took second and third place, respectively, in the 1600. Grenier also took ninth in the 3200 (9:51.63). Matthew Kasper placed second in the long jump (20-09.75) and Ian Foster was fifth in the pole vault (12-00.00). Sean Arms finished the pole vault in eighth place (11-00.00). Matthew Kasper won the triple jump (43-08.50) with Andreas Frasunkiewicz following in ninth place (39-04.75).
Girls’ Golf
Hand girls’ golf competed in the Division II State Championship on June 5, placing 13th as a team with a score of 460.
Boys’ Golf
Hand’s Reece Scott and Kasimir Lesnik were named to the All-SCC team for their efforts on the golf circuit this spring.
