Hand Baseball Records Back-to-Back Wins; Girls’ Lacrosse Wins Regular Season Finale
Baseball
Baseball recorded back-to-back wins last week, to put an end to a four-game slide. The Tigers traveled to West Haven on May 15 in a 6-2 victory before returning home on May 17 to host Cheshire in a 8-6 win. In the contest vs. West Haven, Paul Calandrelli and Brandon SanMarco combined for six shutout innings and seven strikeouts. Sam Markovitz had a double and a triple. Ben Kuja had a two-RBI triple. Troy Piascik and Jacob Rachler each had two hits and an RBI.
When facing Cheshire, Piascik had three hits and three RBI. Tai Nuzzi, Kuja, and Markovitz all recorded two hits. Markovitz had two RBI, Kuja had an RBI, and Nuzzi scored two runs. SanMarco got the win on the mound. The team is now 10-10 for the season.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Girls’ lacrosse got the win in the final game of the regular season. The team traveled to face Foran on May 15 and recorded a 17-4 victory. The team is 11-5 for the season.
Boys’ Tennis
Boys’ tennis faced a challenging week, recording two losses before picking up a win to bring their season record to 16-3. The team traveled to face Amity on May 15 in a 4-3 loss. Singles player Deacon Wilkins (6-1, 7-6, (7-1)) recorded a victory in the effort, and the doubles duos of Matt Vetter/Paul Fumex (6-2, 6-2) and Gus Hodge/Marcello Gonzelves (6-7, (7-5), 6-4, 6-4) picked up wins.
The Tigers hosted Fairfield Prep on May 16. Elliott Booth/Deacon Wikins (6-4, 6-3) recorded the only win in the 6-1 loss. Heading back out on the road, the Tigers faced Fitch on May 17 in a 6-1 victory. Andrew Seehausen (7-5, 1-7, 10-7), Marcello Gonselves (6-2, 6-2), and Wilkins (6-1, 6-1) recorded wins in singles play. In doubles, the pairings of Vetter/Fumex (6-0, 6-3), Will Dodd/Gus Hodge (6-1, 2-6, 6-2), and Xander Konstintino/Trent Wiles (6-2, 6-1) added wins.
Softball
Softball recorded two wins and a loss to end the regular season. The team hosted Hillhouse on May 15 and won 15-0. They traveled to Stratford to take on Bunnell on May 17, in a 23-3 victory. They returned home on May 18, falling to Sacred Heart Academy 7-5. The Tigers are 5-14 for the season.
Girls’ Tennis
Hand girls’ tennis recorded a win and two losses in the final week of regular season play. On May 16, the team traveled to Lauralton Hall and grabbed a 7-0 shutout win. Winning at singles were Laila Haraj-Sai (7-5, 6-2), Loden Bradstreet (6-0, 6-0), Antoinette Lowy (6-1, 6-0), and Emma Lee (6-3, 6-1). All three doubles teams won as well: Libby Rogers/Ella Helfrich (6-2, 6-1), Teagan Ariyan/Juliana Jorens (6-0, 6-3), and Sofia Felgate/Mia Scott (6-3, 6-1).
Staying on the road on May 17, the Tigers faced Amity and fell 7-0. Although recording losses, No. 2 singles player Bradstreet, No. 3 singles player Lowy and No. 1 doubles pairing Rogers/Helfrich all improved their scores since facing the same opponents the last match.
Finally, Hand hosted Guilford on May 18 and lost a tight 4-3 contest. Winning for Hand were Bradstreet at 2 singles (6-4, 6-1), Lowy at 3 singles (6-2, 7-6), and the 1 doubles team of Rogers/Helfrich (6-3, 4-6, 7-5). The team ended the regular season with a record of 12-5.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Boys’ lacrosse picked up a pair of wins last week to end the regular season and to kick off postseason play. The team finished the regular season on May 16 at Wallingford, posting an 18-7 win over Sheehan. Sam Sisk led the way for the Tigers with six goals and seven assists. Alex Kushing, Will Kleine, Jameson McParland and Nick Lombardi added two goals each. They entered tournament play on May 20 and recorded a 12-6 victory over Foran. Sisk recorded four goals and
six assists while Kleine added two assists and one goal. Chase Docker also scored two goals. The Tigers are 12-5.
Boys’ Volleyball
Tigers boys’ volleyball added a pair of wins last week after suffering a loss to bring their season to 6-12. On May 15, the team traveled to Oxford and lost 3-1. They traveled to Newtown on May 17, winning 3-1 before returning home on May 18 to host Kolbe-Cathedral in a 3-0 victory.
