Baseball

Baseball picked up a win in its sole outing last week. The team hosted East Haven on May 15 in a 5-3 victory. After Sam Ametrano took a walk in the bottom of the first inning, Lucas Deshefy drove him in with a double into the right-center gap. Michael Buccaro drew a walk with two men on base, and Carter Williams doubled to score two runs. Bryce Meder crushed a 2-run home run in the bottom of the third to contribute to Guilford’s five runs on the day. Andrew Shosho pitched five innings and earned his team-leading fifth win of the season. Ametrano took over in the sixth, recording the final six outs without surrending a hit or a run to earn the save.

The Grizzlies finished the regular season with a 17-3 record, the program’s best since 2008. This earned them the top seed in the SCC tournament.

Boys’ Tennis

Boys’ tennis’ hard season continued, with the team taking three more losses. They faced Cheshire on the road on May 15, falling 5-2 to their hosts. The doubles duos of Max Banning/Pat Zhang (7-5, 6-2) and Freddy Bonz/Connor MacKenzie (6-2, 4-6, 10-4) recorded wins in the loss.

On May 16, they faced Notre Dame-West Haven on the road and recorded a 5-2 loss. The doubles pairings of Aryan Patel/Avyay Yarlagadda (6-0, 6-1) and Evan Stein/MacKenzie (6-7, 6-4, 10-5) took wins in the effort.

The team took on Stonington at Stonington on May 17, in a 7-0 loss. The Grizzlies are 4-14 for the season.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Girls’ lacrosse grabbed a pair of wins and suffered a loss last week. The team traveled to North Haven on May 15 and picked up a 19-6 victory. On May 16, they visited Staples, taking an 8-6 loss. They righted the ship on May 20, defeating Foran 14-3. The Grizzlies are now 11-6 for the season.

Softball

Softball took two losses in its final two regular season games. On May 15, they hosted Jonathan Law and lost 3-0. The team hosted Norwich Free Academy on May 19, losing 4-3 in eight innings. The team is 14-6 heading into the postseason.

Girls’ Tennis

Girls’ tennis picked up a pair of wins and suffered a loss last week to bring their season record to 16-4. The team hosted Nonnewaug on May 15 in a 7-0 shutout. Riley Mullett (6-0, 6-0), Kallie Kagan (6-0, 6-0), Caroline Hergan (6-3, 6-0), and Molly Peterson (6-0, 6-0) won in singles play. The doubles duos of Izzy Bowman/Sophie Gochman (6-1, 6-2), Alexie Gipson/Peyton Lynch (6-3, 5-7, 10-5), and Kate DeAngelo/Mia Hardy (6-0, 6-1) recorded victories.

The Grizzlies hosted Stonington on May 16, falling to the visitors 4-3. Kagan (6-2, 6-1), Hergan (6-2, 7-5), and Peterson (6-0, 6-0) picked up singles victories in the effort. They bounced back with a 4-3 victory over Daniel Hand on May 18. Loden Broadstreet (6-4, 6-1) and Peterson (6-0, 6-2) recorded singles victories, and the doubles pairings of Gipson/Gabby Kellner (6-2, 3-6, 6-2) and DeAngelo/Hardy (6-2, 6-1) earned wins.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Grizzlies boys’ lacrosse snared two wins last week. On May 16, they traveled to Wallingford, picking up an 18-3 victory over Lyman Hall. On May 18, they hit the road to Trumbull for an 11-2 win. The team is now 8-8 for the season.

Boys’ Outdoor Track

On May 15, the Guilford boys’ outdoor track and field team competed in the SCC East Sectional Meet at North Haven. They finished third overall as a team with a score of 82. The 4x800 meter relay team (Alex Hansen, Alex Milano, Bretton Garrick and Mackinley Cho) took second place (8:43.91). The 4x400 team of Kyle Chen, Andres Gutierrez, Max Freeman and Coleman Love took third place (3:37.84). Love also won the 1600 (4:34.29) and claimed second in the 800 (2:03.74). Gutierrez took third in the 300 meter hurdles (41.91) and third in the triple jump (42’10) while Hansen took fourth in the 1600 (4:41.74) and seventh in the 3200 (19:37.10). Captain Michael Masotti took third in the 800 (2:05.87).

Garrick took fifth place in the 800 (2:07.93) and Milano claimed fifth in the 1600 (4:43.71) and sixth in the 800 (2:08.24). Freshman Jack Faitsch took fifth in the 3200 (10:25.49) and eighth in the 1600 (4:46.98). Timmy Hastings took sixth in the discus throw (120’9) while Wesley Tandler took seventh (113’1). Ethan Wienkamp took eighth in the javelin (128’11). Cho finished in eighth in the 800 (2:13.14). Freeman took eighth in the 400 (54.50) and Cooper Woods took eighth in the 3200 (10:39.54).

On May 19, the boys competed in the SCC Novice Meet at Amity. Quinn Iaccarino came in second in the 800 (2:17.42) and Joel Kowalonek took fourth in the 800 (2:21.82) and fifth in the 1600 (5:05.42). Aaron Kowalonek came in seventh in the 400 (58.19) and ran a personal best in the 200 (26.99). Brayden Matthias took ninth in the javelin (91’3). Luca Scafidi ran a personal best in the 1600 (5:13.28) as did Lance Berry (5:25.40). Maddox Formica also ran a personal best in the 1600 with a time of 5:27.32.

Jonah Cone ran a personal best and took 11th in the 800 (2:30.68) and Logan Plancon set a personal best in all the throws: shotput (24’5’5), discus (67’10), and javelin (89’6). Alex Hough ran a personal best in the 100 (12.82) and so did Liam Nargi (13.5). Charlie Canapari ran a personal best in the 100 (14.2) and Emerson Breda ran a personal best in the 200 (27.51). Aiden Meyer ran a personal best in the 200 with a finishing time of 29.06.

Girls’ Outdoor Track

On May 15, the Guilford girls’ outdoor track and field team competed in the SCC East Sectional Meet. The team finished in fourth place overall with a score of 72 points. Top performers included junior Clara Gahm, who won the 800 in 2:20.95 and took second in the 1600 in 5:19.20. Junior Juliana Montgomery was fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:32.07. Senior Alexa Suchy was second in the 3200 in 12:09.91 and fourth in the 1600 in 5:33.24, with freshman Summer Mangan taking eighth in 5:45.17 in the 1600.

Also placing in the 3200 were senior Olivia Kaisin (12:27.81), Mangan (12:29.64), and sophomore Ana Sadlon (12:31.89). In the high jump, sophomore Lily Sullivan jumped 4’10” to take fourth place, with senior Ella Esposito taking sixth in 4’8”. In the 100 hurdles, it was sophomore Ava Seseske taking eighth in 18.52. In the 100 meter dash, junior Tea Davison finished eighth in 13.61. Sophomore Riley Hickey got seventh in the 400 in 64.06. Sophomore Agnes Batters took home eighth in the 300 hurdles in 52.57. The 4x800 relay team of Montgomery, Suchy, Kaisin, and Sadlon was good enough for fourth in 10:30.17 and the 4x400 relay team of Heckler, Batters, sophomore Dani Selig, and Hickey were runner up in 4:16.29.
