Guilford Baseball and Softball Stay Strong With a Trio of Wins
Baseball
Grizzlies baseball added a trio of wins last week to bring the season record to 16-3. On May 8, the team hosted Wilbur Cross in a 15-5 victory. Lucas Deshefy recorded a grand slam, a triple, five RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Adam Copeland got his first varsity start on the mound and went four innings, surrendering three earned runs while striking out three batters. Copeland then handed the ball to junior Brandon Rosa, who made his varsity pitching debut in the top of the fifth, earning a strikeout in the Governor’s final turn at bat.
They hit the road on May 10, traveling to West Haven to defeat Notre Dame 7-4 before heading to Milford to defeat Foran 6-5 on May 12. In the Notre Dame Game, Andrew Shosho took the win on the mound as he allowed four hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out two batters and walking one. Meder threw one inning in relief and recorded the save. Sam Ametrano started the game and went one inning, allowing three hits and four runs while striking out two. The Grizzlies had ten total hits, including multiple from Carter Williams, Deshefy and Meder.
Versus Foran, Jack Farrah singled on the first pitch of his at-bat to score the go-ahead run for the Grizzlies, Lucas Ametrano singled to drive in a run and Joe Tafro and Mike Buccaro also recorded RBIs. On the mound, Deshefy was credited with the win as he lasted six innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while recording five strikeouts.
Boys’ Tennis
The tough season continued for boys’ tennis with the team falling in all three of its matches. On May 8, they traveled to Fairfield Prep in a 1-6 loss. The doubles duo of Freddy Bonz/Connor Mackenzie (7-6, 7-5) recorded wins in the effort. The team recorded an 0-7 loss at home against Daniel Hand on May 9 and a 3-4 loss to Amity on May 11 at home. Evan Stein grabbed a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles. The doubles pairings of Max Banning/Pat Zhang (6-2, 7-6) and Nate Greif/Logan Wertheim (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) also collected wins. The Grizzlies are now 4-11 for the season.
Softball
Softball grabbed three more wins to bring their season record to 14-4. On May 8, they defeated Career Magnet, 16-4, on the road. They traveled to Branford in a 5-4 win on May 9, and shutout Shelton 15-0 on May 10.
Girls’ Tennis
Girls’ tennis took a pair of losses and a win last week to bring their season record to 14-3. They hosted Cheshire on May 8, in a 6-1 victory. Kallie Kagan (6-3, 6-2), Caroline Hergan (2-6, 6-3, 10-2), and Molly Peterson (6-0, 6-0) earned singles wins, and doubles players Izzy Bowman/Sophie Gochman (6-2, 6-3), Alexie Gipson/Gabby Kellner (6-2, 6-3), and Thitida Khambounhounag/Peyton Lynch (6-4, 2-6, 11-9) added wins.
Daniel Hand came to town on May 10, dealing their hosts a 3-4 loss. Riley Mullett (6-4, 6-3) and Peterson (6-1, 6-0) earned wins in singles play. In doubles, Libby Rogers/Ella Helfrich (6-3, 6-0) and Kate DeAngelo/Mia Hardy (6-4, 6-0) earned wins.
The Grizzlies were defeated on May 11 by Hamden 0-7.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Boys’ lacrosse dropped both of its games last week with both losses coming on the road. The team traveled to Fairfield on May 9 for a 17-2 loss at the hands of Fairfield Prep. On May 11, they traveled to Madison, falling 10-8 to Daniel Hand. The Grizzlies are now 6-8 for the season.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Girls’ lacrosse split the week, posting both a win and a loss on the road. On May 9, they traveled to Cheshire in 12-7 loss. The Grizzlies bounced back on May 11, winning 17-7 at Glastonbury. The team is now 9-5 for the season.
Outdoor Track
On May 10, Guilford boys’ and girls’ outdoor track traveled to New Haven for a tri-meet versus Amity and Career Magnet. The girls finished the dual meet season with a record of 5-4. They beat Career 91-34 and fell short to Amity by a score of 82-55.
Top performers included sophomore Ella Heckler, who was second in the 400 (63.81) and came back to take third in the 200 (27.89). Senior Alexa Suchy won the 800 in 2:32.20 with fellow senior Olivia Kaisin taking third in 2:35.03. Junior Clara Gahm won the 1600 in 5:22.00 with junior Michaela Hogan taking third in the event with a time of 6:07.26. Gahm came back to take second in the 3200 (13:10.76) followed by fellow junior Juliana Montgomery (13:11.75) in third. Freshman Maya Kos-Graham took second in the 300 hurdles in 55.33.
The 4x800 relay team was victorious, recording a time of 11:05.31. The team consisted of Alexa Suchy, Summer Mangan, Ana Sadlon and Skylar Bohn. The 4x400 team also won in 4:25.33 (Riley Hickey, Ella Heckler, Cassie Ward and Daniella Selig). Freshman Emily O’Sullivan took third place in discus with a throw of 69’4”. Sophomore Lily Sullivan won the high jump, clearing 4’10 with senior teammate Ella Esposito placing second, also clearing 4’10”. Esposito also claimed third in the triple jump (30’ 1/2”).
On May 13, some of the girls competed at the Greater Hartford Invitational at East Hartford. Top performers on the day included senior Ella Esposito, who took fourth place with her personal record jump of 5’0”. Sophomore Ella Heckler was seventh in the 400 in her season’s best time of 61.99. Junior Clara Gahm continued her tremendous season with her personal best in the 800, good enough for fifth place and a time of 2:20.00. Sophomore Agnes Batters had her best 300 hurdles of the season, recording a time of 51.08 to take home 12th place.
The boys had many standout performances in the tri-meet with Amity and Career Magnet, as well. Guilford won the 4x400 meter relay (Kyle Chen, Coleman Love, Colin Lataillade, Josh Chen) with a time of 3:34.50. Andres Gutierrez won the 300 hurdles (40.42) and came in second in the triple jump (42’2). Josh Chen won the 800 (2:00.74) and Alex Hansen won the 3200 (10:08.77). Timmy Hastings won the discus (116’9) while Connor Pensa took second in the 3200 (10:26.02). Coleman Love placed second in the 800 (2:01.47) and Kyle Chen took second in the 400 (53.43).
Wesley Tandler finished in second in the discus (105’) while Michael Masotti came in second in the 1600 (4:55.7). Ethan Wienkamp placed second in the javelin (125’). Enzo Taverna took third in the 3200 (10:30.41) and Colin Lataillade took third in the 400 (53.85). Michael O’Brien followed with a third place finish in the 200 (23.99) and Jack Magee took third in the discus (100’9). Alan Shapera and Josh Daniels tied for second in the high jump (5’2).
