Grizzlies baseball grabbed three back-to-back wins to bring their season record to 13-3. The team took on neighboring Daniel Hand in Madison on May 1, picking up a 5-3 victory. Returning home on May 3, they defeated West Haven 5-3. On May 5, they played host to Cheshire in a 12-6 victory.
Boys’ Tennis
The tough season continues for boys’ tennis with the team adding two more losses to its season resume. On May 1, the team hosted Notre Dame-West Haven, falling 4-3. All three doubles teams grabbed victories. Max Banning/Pat Zhang won 6-1, 6-0. Nate Grief/Logan Wertheim won two 6-3 sets. Aryan Patel/Avyay Yarlagadda won 6-4, 7-6, 6-4.
They traveled to Fitch on May 2 and were defeated by their hosts 4-3. Banning/Zhang won 6-1, 6-2. Grief/Wertheim won 6-2, 6-2 and Freddy Bonz/Connor Mackenzie won 7-5, 6-2. The Grizzlies are 4-7 for the season.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Girls’ lacrosse snapped a two-game skid, picking up a win in their sole game last week. The team hosted Amity Regional on May 1, grabbing a 16-13 victory. They are now 8-4 for the season.
Girls’ Tennis
Girls’ tennis added four more wins to bring the season record to 13-1. On May 1, they defeated Lauralton Hall on the road 6-1. In singles, Riley Mullett (6-0, 6-0), Caroline Hergan (6-0, 6-0), and Molly Peterson (6-0, 6-0) picked up wins. The doubles duos of Izzy Bowman/Sophie Gochman (7-5, 6-4), Kate DeAngelo/Mia Hardy (7-6, 6-3), and Makenna Clark/Juliette Kellner (6-0, 6-0) also recorded wins.
The team defeated Sacred Heart on May 3 7-0. Mullett (6-2, 6-2), Kallie Kagan (6-1, 6-0), Hergan (6-0, 6-0), and Peterson (6-0, 6-0) recorded wins in singles play. Bowman/Gochman (6-1, 6-0), Alexie Gipson/Kellner (7-5, 6-4), and Thitida Khambounhounag/Peyton Lynch (6-0, 6-0) recorded doubles victories.
The Grizzles took a 4-0 win on May 4 at North Haven, with Mullett (2-2), Kagan (6-0, 6-1), Hergan (6-1, 6-1), and Peterson (6-0, 6-0) picking up singles wins. Bowman/Gochman (6-2, 6-1) won in doubles.
On May 6, the team wrapped up the week with a 7-0 win at home over Jonathan Law. Mullett (6-0, 6-1), Hergan (6-0, 6-1), Lynch (6-1, 6-0), and Hardy (6-0, 6-0) recorded wins in singles play. Bowman/Gochman (7-5, 4-6, 6-2), Kate Gasparini/Breanna Shelton (6-0, 6-0), and Julia Castonguay/Olivia Cowperthwait (6-4, 6-0) picked up doubles victories.
Softball
Softball grabbed a pair of wins last week to bring their season record to 11-4. On May 3, they traveled to West Haven, picking up a 3-1 win. On May 4, they hosted Sacred Heart Academy, edging out a 6-5 win.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Boys’ lacrosse stumbled last week, sandwiching a win between two losses. The team traveled to Middletown on May 1, falling short to Xavier 15-13. They returned home on May 3, defeating New Milford 14-7. On May 6, they hosted Avon in a 7-5 defeat. The Grizzlies are now 6-6 for the season.
Crew
On May 7, the Guilford crew team hosted a tri-meet race with Avon and Stonington. In the girls’ varsity eight race, Stonington set the pace early and built a lead down the course, finishing in 5:20. Guilford followed with a time of 5:29 ahead of Avon’s 5:44. The boys’ varsity eight race had a tighter finish. Stonington finished the 1,350-meter course in 4:36, six seconds ahead of Guilford’s 4:42. Avon finished third with a time of 4:46.
Outdoor Track
On May 2, the girls’ outdoor track team hosted Lauralton Hall and the boys hosted Fairfield Prep. The girls won by a score of 86-60 to improve to 4-3. Top performers were the 4x100 relay team (Ella Heckler, Eliza Hastings, Abby Williams, Tea Davison) who won in 54.9. Davison won the 100 in 13.4 and was second in the 200 in 29.0. Williams was second in the 100 in 13.9. Junior Clara Gahm won the 1600 in 5:24.8, followed by senior Alexa Suchy in 5:27.5. Sophomore Agnes Batters won the 300 hurdles in 53.0 as well as the pole vault in 6’6”. Junior Juliana Montgomery won the 800 in 2:31.9, followed by Gahm in 2:32.1. Freshman Summer Mangan was second in the 3200 in 12:35.8.
The 4x400 relay was victorious in 4:27.2, led by Dani Selig, Heckler, Cassie Ward and Riley Hickey. Senior Ella Esposito, tied with sophomore Lily Sullivan, won the high jump in 4’6” and won the triple jump in 29’6.5”. Junior Brenna Tichy won the javelin in 62’4” and was second in the shot put in 24’6.5”. Senior Nora Amer was second in the discus in 67’8”.
For the boys, the Man of the Meet was Alex Hansen, who won the 3200 with a time of 10:20.8. Coleman Love won the 800 (2:07.8) and the 1600 (4:58.5). Guilford won the 4x400 relay (Kyle Chen, Love, Colin Lataillade, and Josh Chen) in 3:39.9. Guilford also won the 4x800 relay, which consisted of Michael Masotti, Alex Milano, Max Freeman, and Love in 8:57.3. Josh Chen came in third in the 100 (11.3) and second in the 200 (23.4). Andres Gutierrez won the 300 hurdles (41.5) and the triple jump (40’7). Timmy Hastings won the discus (112’11) and took third in the shootout (34’6.5). Milano took second in the 800 (2:08.5) while Ethan Wienkamp won the javelin (105’8). He also took third in the 800 (2:12.6).
Lataillade took third in the 400 (54.2) and Mackinley Cho took second in the 1600 with a time of 4:59.1. Aiden Soper took second in the triple jump (38’8) and Jack Faitsch finished in third place in the 1600 (5:05.2). Trevor Ridley took third in the 200 (24.1) while Jason Li took second in the 300 hurdles in 47.4. Jefferson Guo took second in the 3200 (11:28.4). Finally, Jack Magee claimed second in the shootout (34’7) and Matt Celotto took second in the discus (93’6).
On May 6, the girls traveled to the Middletown Invitational while the boys went to the Org-Jake Spartan Invitational in Woodbridge. For the boys, Coleman Love won the 1600 (4:31.12) and Josh Chen won the 400 (50.68). Conor Pensa took third in the 3200 (10:32.36) and the 4x400 team took third place (3:35.43). The boys also participated in the Freshman/Sophomore Invitational on May 5. Jack Faitsch won the 1600 meter race (4:47.56) and Enzo Taverna took fifth place in that event (4:51.81). Ben Glascoff took sixth place in the long jump (17’11) and Ethan Wienkamp took third place in the javelin (125-07). The Guilford 4x400 team (Davyd Oleksyuk, Wienkamp, Josh Daniels and Max Freeman) took sixth place (3:50.47).
For the girls at Middletown, top performers included Clara Gahm who won the 3200 in 11:53.14. Teammate Alexa Suchy was fourth in 12:05.12. The 4x400 relay team finished fourth in 4:19.53, led by an all sophomore team of Dani Selig, Agnes Batters, Ella Heckler and Riley Hickey.
