Westbrook Girls’ Tennis Wins Two; Boys’ Tennis Wins a Trio
Baseball
Baseball picked up its second win of the season, snapping a 10-game losing streak. The team traveled to Old Saybrook on May 1, falling 6-3, before visiting Old Lyme on May 3 in an 11-9 defeat .The Knights hit the road to Moodus on May 5 and defeated Hale Ray 4-0. The team is now 2-13 for the season.
Boys’ Tennis
Boys’ tennis added a trio of wins to to its resume to bring their season record to 10-4. On May 1, they traveled to face Haddam-Killingworth in a 4-3 victory. Elliot Koplas won at No. 1 singles (7-6, [TB 10-8], 3-6, 0-1 ret) and Miles Hayden also grabbed a singles win (6-2, 6-2). The doubles team of Ryan Engels/John Freund won 6-2, 6-3 and Trevor Jones/Jonathan Brajczewski won 6-2, 6-1). They returned home on May 3, hosting Old Saybrook in a 7-0 win. The Knights visited Ledyard on May 5, dealing their hosts a 5-2 loss.
Softball
Softball suffered a tough week, taking two losses and a win. The team traveled to Putnam on May 1, grabbing a 29-19 victory. They returned home on May 3, hosting Old Lyme in a 15-1 loss. On May 5, they hosted Hale Ray in a 16-2 loss. The Knights are now 3-11.
Girls’ Tennis
Girls’ tennis grabbed back-to-back victories last week, adding to their 12-1 season. The team hosted Haddam-Killingworth on May 1, shutting out the visitors 7-0. Meghan Bache (6-0, 6-2), Delaney Belcourt (6-0, 6-0), Ava Ciarcia (6-0, 6-0), and Caroline Dias (6-0, 6-0) earned singles wins. The doubles duos of Olivia Palumbo/Adriana Stranieri (6-0, 6-0), Giovanna Silva/Natalie Palumbo (6-3, 6-0), and Gabby Spash/Norah Hayden (6-1, 6-3) all recorded wins.
The team traveled to Old Saybrook on May 3, earning another 7-0 victory. Bache (6-2, 7-5), Belcourt (6-2, 6-3), Ciarcia (6-3, 6-4), and Dias (6-0, 6-1) picked up wins in singles. Palumbo/Stranieri (6-0, 6-0), Silva/Palumbo (6-2, 3-6, 6-1), and Spash/Hayden (6-0, 7-5) picked up wins in doubles.
Outdoor Track
On May 2, Westbrook boys’ and girls’ outdoor track traveled to Old Lyme for a tri-meet with Haddam-Killingworth. For the boys, Brandon Naccarato took second place in the 100 meters (10.94) and first in the long jump (18’8.5”). John Grace took third in the 100 meters (11.7) and Michael VonEhr won the javelin (129’9”). Vincent Naccarato took third in the 200 (24.02) and fourth in the javelin (126’). Hever Gomez placed second in the 110 meter hurdles (17.9). The 4x100 team of Vincent Naccarato, John Grace, James Grace and Brandon Naccarato won with a time of 44.64. On the girls’ side, Mackenzie True took second in the 300 meter hurdles (55.0) and third in the long jump (13’5”). Kayla Prisley took hird in the 100 (13.94) and in the 200 (28.7). Leticia Pires placed second in the triple jump (31’5.5”).
The teams then traveled to the Marty Roberts Invitational at Coginchaug on May 6. For the boys, the 4x100 team of Vincent Naccarato, John Grace, James Grace, Brandon Naccarato recorded a first place time of 43.79, qualifying for the standards set for Nike Outdoor Nationals, hosted at University of Oregon. Brandon Naccarato also won the 100 meters (11.12) and Hever Gomez took ninth in the 300 hurdles (45.77). Michael VonEhr placed fifth in the javelin (144’4). For the girls, Leticia Pires placed sixth in the triple jump (31’11”) and Kayla Prisley placed 12th in the 200, qualifying for states with a time of 27.78. The 4x100 team of Mackenzie True, Pires, Jamie Freis and Prisley qualified for states with their fifth place time of 55.03.
