Morgan Outdoor Track Continues to Shine; Boys’ Tennis Grabs Two Wins
Baseball
Morgan baseball snapped its four-game losing skid, picking up a win on the road to end the week. The Huskies hosted North Branford on May 1, falling 12-3, before hosting Valley Regional on May 3 in an 11-0 shutout loss. They bounced back on May 5 in a 3-2 win over Haddam-Killingworth on the road. The team is 6-10 for the season.
Boys’ Tennis
Boys’ tennis recorded two more wins to add to their 8-1 season. On May 1, they hosted Portland in a 7-0 victory. Joseph Morse (6-0, 6-0), Matt Lopez (6-0, 6-0), Steven Kinser (6-1, 6-0), and Nicholas Bausch (forfeit) recorded singles victories. The doubles duos of Oliver Baker/Nick Veltrano, Ryder Watson/Darren Abbott, and Erik Barrera/Noah Borkowski won by forfeit.
On May 3, the team hosted Haddam-Killingworth, winning 6-1. Morse (6-1, 6-1), Kinser (6-3, 6-4), and Bausch (6-0, 6-0) recorded singles victories. Baker/Veltrano (3-6, 7-6, 10-4), Barrera/Borkowski (6-0, 6-0), and Abbott/Watson (6-1, 6-2) won in doubles play.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Boys’ lacrosse split the week, recording both a win and a loss at home. On May 2, the team hosted Haddam-Killingworth in a 6-3 loss. They posted a 17-4 victory at home on May 4 over Old Lyme. The Huskies are now 7-4.
Softball
The tough season continued for Huskies softball, recording three back-to-back losses to bring the season record to 2-12. The team traveled to North Branford on May 2, falling 14-1. On May 3, they lost 11-6 on the road to Valley Regional. They returned home on May 5, falling 12-3 to Haddam-Killingworth.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Girls’ lacrosse recorded two losses last week to bring the season record to 3-9. On May 4, the team traveled to Old Lyme in a 12-2 loss. They returned home on May 6 to host Lauralton Hall in a 16-2 loss.
Outdoor Track
On May 2, Morgan boys’ and girls’ outdoor track hosted a tri-meet with Coginchaug and Portland. For the boys, Michael Fusco placed third in the 200 meters (23.0) and second in the 400 meters (54.4). In the 1600, Kaleb Richardson (5:40.0), Owen Lombardi (5:43.0) and Trevor Leach (5:47.0) placed fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Jeremy Medranda placed fourth in the high jump (5’0) and Liam Totten placed sixth (4’10). Carter Hayash recorded a PR in the long jump of 16’3 and placed fifth, Totten placed ninth in that event (14’10). Hayash also placed fifth in the triple jump (31’8). Cesar Martinez (27’1) was ninth in the shot put and Robby Estabrook (151’6) won the javelin. Mason Jakober followed in eighth place in the javelin (91’8).
The girls had several runners place in the top 10 in the 100 meters. Those runners included Caeley Ayer (second place, 12.8), Logan Pernal (third place, 13.4), Destiny Rehberg (fourth place, 13.6), Olivia Ruotolo (fifth place, 13.7), Riley Febbroriello (fifth place, 13.7), Juli White (eighth place, 13.8) and Kaydence Koloskie-Phelps (10th place, 14.0). In the 200, White (28.5), Anastasia Luke (28.5) and Febbroriello (28.5) finished in second, third and fourth place, respectively. Kate Gardner finished in seventh in the event with a time of 29.0. Eve Gardner placed fourth in the 400 meters (1:11.0) and Addy Reed claimed third in the 800 meters (2:45.0). Natalie Estabrook won the 3200 meters (13:20.3). For hurdles, Ruotolo won the 100 (17.1) and Luke won the 300 (53.9).
The 4x100 relay team of Pernal, Febbroriello, Luke and Ayer claimed second place with a time of 53.8. They were followed by the Huskies’ third place team of Karla Duque, Avery Vece, Ruotolo and Jackie Ciarleglio (57.5). The 4x800 relay team (Sophie Morello, Estabrook, Reed and Gardner came in first (11:28.00). Koloskie-Phelps won the high jump (4’6) and Gabrielle Navarra took second (4’4). Destiny Rehberg came in first in the shot put (25’1), third in the discus (55’9) and second in the javelin (82’10).
The team then traveled to Coginchaug on May 6 for the Marty Roberts Invitational. Meet awards for Morgan went to the girls’ 4x100 team that took third place with a time of 53.72 (Ayer, Luke, Pernal and Glenda Zhiminaicela), Julia White for sixth place in the 400 meter dash (1:03.70), Destiny Rehberg for first place in the girls’ javelin (88-06), and Robby Estabrook for first place in the boys’ javelin (169-08). Estabrook also won the boys’ “Best Thrower of the Meet” award. Other standouts included Natalie Estabrook who took eight place in the 800 meters (2:40.64) and Ashley Inglis who took ninth in the high jump (15-02.00).
