Deep River Horseshoe League Opens Its Season


The Deep River Horseshoe League recently started its season with many intense matchups. In Week One, Giants’ Mike Zanelli Sr. had a historical night, as he dominated all the statistics on Opening Day (Series: Points — 176; Ringers — 49; Doubles — 11; Game: Points — 51; Ringers — 16; Doubles — 4) . The scores he put up are ones you typically see after mid-season. He was the leading “A” Division player for the night.

In his four games, he had no open boxes but he scored in all 48 boxes. In his second game, he had a ringer/double in every box. The Giants defeated Frank Rausch’s White Sox 4-2. Sox Bob Beckwith was the leading scorer for “C’ Division with a 81 series.

Sheryl Serviss’s Tigers defeated Mark Goodale’s Marlins 5-1. Sheryl was the second leading scorer for “A” Division with a

137 series. Matthew Valentine filled in as a sub on the Tigers — he is the first 16 year-old to play in the league.

Kris Toohey’s Cards defeated Dennis Allen’s Orioles 5-1. This was a close match, with three of four games decided by two points. Todd Nuhn’s Yankees defeated Joe Heery’s Rangers 5-1. Todd and Joe battled each other throughout the match, but Joe edged Todd 132 — 127. Joe’s 132 was the third best score for “A” Division players.

The Tigers, Cards and Yankees are all tied for first place, with the Giants, Rockies, Royals, Cubs and Braves all tied for second place with 4-2 records. Top Scorers for the “B” Division included Damin Roberts (114), John Hutra (109) and Jeremy Davis (102). Top Scorers for the “C” Division included Bob Beckwith (81), Deb Scully (77) and Dave Atkinson (72).
