H-K Outdoor Track, Baseball Both Remain Undefeated
Baseball
Cougars baseball continued its winning ways last week, adding four more victories to its undefeated season. The team traveled to Old Lyme on April 24, picking up a 9-5 decision. They returned home on April 26, putting up a 9-0 victory over visiting Hale Ray. On April 27, the Cougars visited Westbrook and hung a 15-0 loss on their hosts before defeating Cromwell 3-2 at home on May 1. The team is 13-0 for the season.
Boys’ Tennis
Boys’ tennis added two wins and a loss to its record last week. On April 24, they hosted Cromwell in a 4-3 loss. In singles, Eddie White recorded two 6-0 wins, and Joe Wessinger went 6-4, 5-7, and 6-4. The doubles duo of Livingston and Frolich won by default.
The team hosted Portland on April 25 in a 6-1 victory. White (6-2, 6-3), Bryce Leiberman (6-0, 6-0), and Wessinger (6-2, 6-2) each picked up wins in singles play. In doubles, Luzzetti and Napoletano, Stevens and Merwin, and Frolich/Castelli all won by default.
On April 28, the Cougars hosted Coginchaug, earning a 7-0 win. White (6-1, 6-1), Leiberman (6-0, 6-0), Wessinger (6-0, 6-0), and Will Lirot (default) all picked up victories in singles. Luzzetti/Napoletano (6-1, 6-0), Stevens/Merwin (default), and Livingston/Frolich (default) won in doubles.
The team is now 4-5 for the season.
Softball
Softball split the week with a loss at home and a win on the road. On April 24, the team hosted Old Lyme in a 1-0 loss. They traveled to Moodus on April 26 and picked up an 8-1 victory over Hale Ray. The team is now 8-3 for the season.
Girls’ Tennis
Girls’ tennis picked up its first win of the season. On April 25, the team hosted Portland and earned a 5-2 victory. The Cougars are now 1-7.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Boys’ lacrosse added a pair of wins and a loss last week to bring the season record to 8-2. On April 25, the Cougars hosted Valley Regional and recorded a 12-7 victory. North Branford came to town on April 27, and the home team was narrowly defeated 7-6 in overtime. They bounced back on April 29, traveling to Bristol in an 8-6 win over St Paul Catholic.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Girls’ lacrosse split the week, recording both a win and a loss on the road. On April 25, the team traveled to Deep River to defeat Valley Regional 17-5. They hit the road to North Branford on April 27, falling to their hosts 17-12. The Cougars are 5-3 for the season.
Golf
On May 1, H-K golf hosted East Hampton in a 185-187 Cougars victory. Declan Kessler scored a 42 on the course. Colton Whiteley scored 45, followed by Andrew Crayton with 47. Owen Staskelunas followed with a score of 51 and Jacob Maier scored a 52. H-K’s overall record is now 1-4.
Outdoor Track
On April 25, the Cougars boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams continued their dual season as they hosted a tri meet against East Hampton and North Branford. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams came away with two victories on the day, as the boys defeated North Branford by a score of 105-39 and East Hampton by a score of 86-64 to improve their dual meet season record to 4-0. Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Alex Lara in the 400 (52.3), Daniel McCourt in the 800 (2:13), Jack Cozean in the 1600 (4:53), Luke Hedges in the 3200 (10:33), and John Panzera in the 110 hurdles (17.0), 300 hurdles (46.0), and high jump (5’10”). Tim Cavrell led the way in the shot put (38’8.5”) and javelin (126’0”) and Ryan Rafferty contributed for the triple jump (32’8”). The boys’ 4x800 and 4x400 relays were also victorious on the afternoon.
The H-K girls’ team also went 2-0 on the day to continue their dual meet season undefeated, as they defeated North Branford by a score of 133-17 and beat East Hampton 78-67. Leading the way for the Cougars were the following event winners: Mariella Fulcher in the 100 (13.2) and 200 (26.5), Jayani Bennett in the 100 hurdles (17.2), Isabel Berardino in the 800 (2:32) and 1600 (5:51), and Leah Chester in the long jump (15’0”) and triple jump (33’4”). The girls also swept all three relays, as they won the 4x800, 4x100 and 4x400 relays to contribute valuable team points.
