Westbrook Girls’ Tennis Wins a Trio; Outdoor Track Sets New Records
Baseball
Knights baseball continued its challenging season, recording three more losses in its 1-11 season. The team hosted Cromwell on April 24 in a 11-8 loss before hitting the road to North Branford on April 26 for a 5-2 defeat. On April 27, the team returned home to host Haddam-Killingworth in a 15-0 shutout loss.
Boys’ Tennis
Boys’ tennis recorded two losses and a win last week to bring their season record to 7-4.
On April 24, they hosted Morgan in a 2-5 defeat. For doubles Ryan Engels and John Freund recorded 6-1 and 6-3 wins. Trevor Jones and Jon Brajczewski won 3-6, 6-4, and 6-4.
The Knights bounced back on April 26, traveling to Deep River to face Valley Regional in a 5-2 decision. On April 28, the Knights hosted Montville, falling to the visitors 2-5.
Softball
Softball picked up its second win of the season last week, improving their record to 2-9. The team visited Cromwell on April 24, losing in a 0-14 shutout. On April 26, they hosted North Branford, losing 1-18 to the visitors. They picked up a win via forfeit on April 27.
Girls’ Tennis
Knights girls’ tennis picked up a trio of wins last week to add to their impressive season record.
The team, now 10-1, traveled to Clinton on April 24. They picked up a 7-0 win over Morgan. In singles, Megan Bache won two 6-0 matches, Delaney Belcourt went 6-2, 4-6, and 6-3; Ava Ciarcia went 6-4, 4-6, and 6-2; and Caroline Dias won 6-1 and 6-0. Doubles duos Olivia Palumbo and Adriana Stranieri won 6-2 and 6-1, Giovanna Silva and Natalie Palumbo won 6-0 and 6-1, and Gabby Spash and Norah Hayden went 3-6, 6-1, and 6-3.
On April 26, the team hosted Valley Regional in a 4-3 victory. In singles, Bache won two 6-1 matches, Ciarcia won 7-5 and 6-0, and Dias won 6-1 and 6-0. In doubles, Olivia Palumbo and Stranieri won 4-6, 6-1, and 6-2.
The team traveled to Portland on April 28 for a 7-0 win. Bache, Belcourt, Ciarcia and Dias all recorded two 6-0 wins in singles play. In doubles, Olivia Palumbo and Stranieri won 6-1 and 6-2. Silva and Natalie Palumbo won 6-1 and 6-0, and Spash and Hayden won two 6-0 matches.
Outdoor Track
On April 26, the Westbrook boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams hosted Morgan and Old Saybrook in a tri-meet.
For the boys, Brandon Naccarato stood out in a variety of events. He placed first overall in the 100 meter dash (11.2). In the high jump, he qualifed for shorelines with a first place finish (5’2). He also placed first in the long jump (18’10”). John Grace placed second in the 100 meters (11.7) and third in the 200 meters (24.4). Michael VonEhr finished in third in the javelin (129’6”) and Vincent Naccarato won the 200 meters (23.7) to qualify him for shorelines. He also qualified for states in the javelin, in which he placed second overall (130’6”). Hever Gomez won the 110 meter hurdles (17.7). The boys’ 4x100 relay team of Vincent Naccarato, John Grace, James Grace, and Brandon Naccarato (44.64) qualified for states with their first place finish.
On the girls’ side, Ava Kaluski placed third in the discus (66’2”) qualifiying for shorelines. Mackenzie True qualified for shorelines in the 300 meter hurdles (54.8, third place). Kayla Prisley took fifth in the 100 meter dash (13.6) and first in the 200 (28.5).
On April 29, the team traveled to the Ellington Invitational. The boys’ 4x100 relay team of Vincent Naccarato, John Grace, James Grace, and Brandon Naccarato set a new meet record with their first place time of 44.74. Brandon Naccarato took third in the 100 meters (11.58) and Hever Gomez took fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (18.59). He also placed eighth in the 300 meter hurdles (47.43). For the girls, Leticia Pires placed third in the triple jump (31’3”).
