Valley Baseball Wins Two Straight and Outdoor Track Splits Tri-Meet


Baseball

Warriors baseball added a pair of wins to its season record last week while taking a loss on the road. The team traveled to Portland on April 24, defeating their hosts 14-1. They hosted Coginchaug on April 26 in a 12-2 victory. On April 28, they traveled to Old Lyme, falling 5-1. The Warriors are now 8-5 for the season.

Boys’ Tennis

Warriors boys’ tennis suffered a pair of losses last week, bringing their season record to 4-4. On April 24, they hosted Old Lyme in a 1-6 loss. Tomas Dahl recorded 7-5 and 6-4 victories in singles play. On April 26, the team hosted Westbrook in a 2-5 loss. In singles play, Aidan Garrity won 6-0 and 6-2, and Charlie Whelan went 7-6, 7-5, and 6-1.

Softball

Softball recorded three losses last week in a tough season, despite starting the week with a strong win at home. On April 24, they played host to Portland in a 24-1 victory. They traveled to North Branford on April 25, falling 12-0. On April 26, they took on Coginchaug on the road, falling to their hosts 11-6. The Warriors returned home on April 28 and suffered a 0-13 defeat at the hands of Old Lyme. The team is now 3-7 for the season.

Girls’ Tennis

Girls’ tennis suffered a two-game skid last week, recording their first and second losses of the season. They traveled to Old Lyme on April 24, falling 7-0. On April 26, they traveled to Westbrook in a 4-3 defeat. In singles, Natalie Noak won 6-2 and by forfeit. In doubles, the duo of Samara Shankar and Clara Shea won two 6-1 matches. Regan Grow and Alessia Pisanzio won two 6-0 matches, and Ashley Cap and Fallyn Belisle won two 6-3 matches. The Warriors are now 7-2.

Boys’ Lacrosse

It was a tough week last week for boys’ lacrosse. The team suffered a pair of losses to bring their season tally to 2-7. On April 25, they fell 12-7 on the road at Haddam-Killingworth. The team returned home on April 27 to host Morgan in a 9-4 defeat.

Girls’ Lacrosse

The challenging season continued for girls’ lacrosse last week, adding two more losses to bring the season record to 0-7. On April 25, they hosted Haddam-Killingworth in a 17-5 loss. They traveled to Clinton on April 27 to face Morgan in a 14-3 loss.

Crew

On April 29, the Valley coed crew team had a regatta at Narragansett Bay against Lincoln and St Mary’s-Lynn. The Warriors earned one first place and three second places. The first place boys’ varsity first boat (6:32.3) was composed of Quentin Baron (cox), Matt Roscoe (stroke), Owen Courtright (3 seat), Jake Marmelstein (2 seat) and Matheus Silva (bow).

Outdoor Track

The boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams traveled to Coginchaug on April 25 for a tri-meet with Hale Ray. Both the boys and the girls split the meet, with the boys getting a win over Hale Ray and a loss to Coginchaug.

The boys were led by Paul Giantonio, winner of the long jump (18’11), high jump (5’8), and the 4x100 meter relay (along with Jack Driscoll, McKinley Hartt, and Aidan Babek). Other strong performances saw Jack Driscoll, winner of the shot put with a throw of 35’8, and Zach Scott, who ran personal bests in the 1600 meters (5:14), and 3200 meters (11:30). The boys are now 2-2 in the Shoreline on the season.

The girls also defeated Hale Ray and took a loss versus Coginchaug. The Warriors were led by Holly Board, who won the 800 meters with a time of 2:41 and performed her season best for the 1600 with a time of 6:03. She was also on the winning 4x800 relay team (along with Grace Aberderhalden, Maddie Riebold, and Emilee Surber) with a time of 10:58 which qualified for states. Lily Frese won the long jump with a jump of 15’2. Freshman Kaleigh Duggan won the triple jump with a jump of 26’2. Campbell Massey won the pole vault and qualified for states with a vault of 7’6. Audrey Board won the high jump with a jump of 4’6. The girls are now 2-2 in the Shoreline for the season.
