Branford Outdoor Track Sets Records; Girls’ Lacrosse Wins Two


Baseball

Hornets baseball had a tough week, going 0-2. On April 24, they hosted North Haven in a 6-2 loss. They hit the road on April 26, falling 5-4 to East Haven. They are now 3-8 for the season.

Girls’ Lacrosse

Girls’ lacrosse picked up a pair of wins last week before losing at home. On April 24, the team hosted Lauralton Hall in a narrow 12-11 victory. They hosted Waterford on April 27, winning 16-10. East Lyme came to town on April 29, defeating their hosts 17-5. The Hornets are now 4-6.

Softball

Softball’s tough season continued last week with the team dropping all three contests. On April 24, they hosted North Haven in a 15-5 loss, and then hosted East Haven on April 26, losing in a 13-0 shutout. They traveled to Milford on April 28 and were defeated by Law 12-0. The team is now 1-10 for the season.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Boys’ lacrosse picked up its first win of the season last week, defeating West Haven at home 13-9 on April 25. They are now 1-8.

Boys’ Tennis

Boys’ tennis picked up a pair of wins last week, bringing their season record to 3-5.The Hornets traveled to North Haven on April 25, posting a 5-2 victory. In singles play, Mathias Schalper went 4-6, 6-3, and 6-4. Adam Albrecht won 6-2, 7-5 and Luke Baylis won 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. The doubles duo of Alex Ferrara and Ishaan Bhawnani won 6-1 and 6-3. Nike Radziunas and Saahil Bhawnani went 1-6, 6-3, and 11-9 in a super tiebreak. On April 28, the team hosted Jonathan Law and won 6-1.

Girls’ Tennis

Girls’ tennis split the week, taking both a win and a loss on the road. On April 25, the team traveled to Lauralton Hall, winning in a 4-3 contest. In singles play, Peyton Gaudreau won two 6-0 matches, Leila Omeragic won 6-2, 3-6, and 6-4, and Hanna Omeragic won 6-0 and 6-1. In doubles, Erin Newlan and Nunu Smith won 3-6, 6-3, and 6-4. On April 28, the Hornets traveled to North Haven and lost 2-5. Peyton Gaudreau picked up a 6-1, 6-1 singles win, and the doubles team of Tate Jones and Julianne Henkel won 6-2, 6-4. The team is 4-5.

Outdoor Track

On April 25, the boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams traveled to Foran, where the girls grabbed a 80-67 win.

Top performers included Joelle Budz, who took first place in three events: — 100 meters (12.7), the 200 meters (27.0), and the 4x400 relay (4:25). Ella Stone took first in the high jump (4-6) and in the long jump (14-8). Sarah Nwagboli won the 400 meters (63.6) and was part of the first place 4x400 relay team. She also placed second in the 200 (27.1). Lucy Moran took first place in the 3200 (11:33) and ran another leg of the 4x400 team. Violet Marrandino won the 1600 with a time of 5:36, and Gianna Piscitelli was first in the discus (70’). Hannah Jackson won the javelin (65-9).

The boys also grabbed a victory, winning 82.5-67.5. A strong showing realized 55 personal records and saw five Class MM State Qualifying marks achieved. Last week’s qualifiers included Ryder Kropiwnicki’s finish with a time of 11.5 (second place). Peter DiStasio posted a time of 24.0 in the 200 (second place), and Colin Donahoe recorded a time of 51.5 (for first place) in the 400, Massimo Corrick ran a time of 10:28.0 in the 3200 (first place) and Enaji Muhammad in the Triple Jump had a mark of 39’8” (second place). Other notable finishes included Supreme Shrestha in the 400 (59.0, third place). Sam Copola, Colin Donahoe and Nolan Weted finished first, second & third, respectively, in the 800 (2:20.3, 2:20.8 & 2:29.8). The 1600 saw Sam Copola and Noah Hauswirth finish first and second (5:03 & 5:07), Massimo Corrick (10:28) and Noah Hauswirth (11:21) placed first and third in the 3200, Ryder Kropiwnicki placed first in the 110 hurdles (16.2) and Avery Atkinson won the 300 hurdles (45.1).

The 4x800 relay team, featuring Donahoe, Coppola, Corrick and DiStasion finished first with a time of 9:30. In the throws, Drew Schwartz placed second in the shot put (37’1”), Evan Bouley (92’4”) and Maxfield Parsell (86’4”) placed second and third in the discus and Kropiwnicki, Bouley and Atkinson swept the javelin (135’1”, 130’4” & 115’6”). Enaji Muhammad tied for first in the high jump (6’0”) and second in the long jump (19’8”). Evan Bouley cleared 10’0” in the pole vault (second place) and as the sun was setting, Ryder Kropiwnicki set a personal record and placed first in the pole vault, clearing a height of 14’0”.
