Hand Boys’ Tennis Continues Undefeated Season, Girls’ Lacrosse Wins Three
Girls’ Lacrosse
Tigers girls’ lacrosse continued its winning ways, posting three back-to-back victories. The team started the week on the road at Sheehan and recorded a resounding 19-1 win. Returning home on April 19, they picked up a 12-7 victory over Amity Regional before adding a 17-4 win over Norwich Free Academy on April 20. The team is now 7-1 for the season.
Baseball
Tigers boys’ baseball stopped a three game skid after posting a win to end the week.
The team traveled to West Haven on April 17 to face Notre Dame in a 13-3 loss. On April 19, they returned home to host Amity Regional, falling 12-3. Troy Piascik went 3-3 with an RBI and Ben Kuja went 2-4 with two stolen bases.
The Tigers hosted Xavier on April 20 and edged out a 12-11 victory to the No. 1 ranked squad on a walk-off RBI single by freshman Nick Maynard. Troy Piascik was 3-4 with a three-run home run. Nick Antonetti had three hits, and Jacob Rachler, Sam Markovitz, and Maynard all had two hits. Paul Calandrelli recorded three RBI and three runs scored.
Hand hosted West Haven on April 24 and grabbed a 10-2 victory. Piascik was 2-4 with three RBI. Sam Markovitz went 2-3 with three RBI and Vinny Benevento was 2-4 with two RBI. Antonetti scored two runs, as did Tai Nuzzi. Brandon SanMarco earned his third win of the season while striking out four batters. The team is now 5-5 for the season.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Boys’ lacrosse put up a pair of wins after starting the week with their first loss of the season. On April 18, the team hit the road to Fairfield, falling to Fairfield Prep 16-3. They visited Woodbridge on April 20 to face Amity Regional in a 12-11 victory, and the team returned home on April 22 to host McMahon in a 17-4 victory.
In the Amity game, Sam Sisk recorded two goals and four assists. Alex Cushing added three goals and two assists, and Will Kleine added three goals and one assist. Spiro Maniatis had an assist and Jameson McParland scored two goals. Nisck Lombardi and PJ Ohanlon recorded an assist each, and Ohanlon also scored two goals. Maniatis won 20 faceoffs on 27 attempts, and Jack Orlando recorded eight saves in goal.
In the McMahon contest, Sisk recorded his 100th career assist and Maniatis was 95% on faceoffs. The Tigers are 6-1 on the season.
Boys’ Volleyball
The tough season continued for boys’ volleyball, with the team posting two losses to bring their overall season record to 1-7. The Tigers traveled to Shelton on April 17 and recorded a 3-1 loss. Returning home on April 19, the team suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of visiting Amity Regional.
Softball
Softball recorded its first two wins of the season last week, picking up two road victories. The team traveled to Wallingford on April 17 and defeated Lyman Hall 12-9. They returned home on April 19 for a 2-1 loss to visiting Foran before returning to the road on April 21, traveling to New Haven to hang a 16-0 loss on Hillhouse. The team is now 2-8.
Boys’ Tennis
Hand boys’ tennis hosted Branford on April 17 and won 7-0. Singles wins came from Elliott Booth (6-1, 6-2), Matt Vetter (6,0, 6-1), Andrew Seehusen (6-2, 6-2) and Alexander Konstantino (6-2, 6-2). For doubles, Paul Fumex and Deacon Wilkins grabbed 6-1 and 6-0 wins. Will Dodd and Gavin Waterman won 6-3 and 6-4, and Patrick McEwen and Gus Hodge collected 6-3 and 6-1 victories.
On April 21, the Tigers hit the road to Cheshire and won 5-2. Booth took two 6-0 wins. Vetter won 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. Seehusen grabbed a 6-3 victory. Fumex and Wilkins won 6-1, 6-3 and McEwen and Hodge recorded 6-1, 6-0 victories. Hand then defeated Guilford at home on April 24, 7-0. Marcelo Gonzalez grabbed a singles win (6-1, 6-2). Trent Wiles participated in doubles with Konstantino and they won 6-2, 6-4.
Girls’ Tennis
Hand girls’ tennis traveled to Sheehan on April 18 and grabbed a 7-0 win. Winning at singles were senior captain Laila Haraj-Sai (6-4, 6-2), Loden Bradstreet (6-1, 6-0), Antoinette Lowy (6-0, 6-0), and Emma Lee (6-0, 6-1). Winning at doubles were senior captain Libby Rogers and her partner Ella Helfrich (6-0, 6-2), as well as Teagan Ariyan/Juliana Jorens (6-3, 6-3). Making her debut in the varsity lineup, senior Sofia Felgate won at 3 doubles with her partner Hayden Agee, 6-3, 6-4.
On April 19, Hand recorded a 7-0 home win vs. Mercy. Claiming decisive singles victories were Haraj-Sai (6-0, 6-2), Bradstreet (6-0, 6-0), Lowy (6-1, 6-0), and Lee (6-1, 6-1). All doubles teams won as well, with Rogers/Helfrich (6-3, 6-2) dominating at 1 doubles; 2 doubles Ariyan/Jorens (6-2, 0-6, 1-0) squeezing out a victory against tough opponents; and with her first official win in the varsity lineup, Mia Scott was victorious at 3 doubles with her partner Felgate (6-4, 4-6, 6-3).
On April 21, the Tigers traveled to Shelton and won 5-2. Winning at singles were Bradstreet (6-0, 6-0), Lowy (6-0, 6-0), and Lee (6-2, 6-2). At 1 doubles, Rogers and Helfrich prevailed 6-0, 6-3; Ariyan and Jorens won their 2 doubles match with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. Although they weren’t able to pull off a win, junior Kayla Johnson and sophomore Abby Bishop made their varsity debut as the 3 doubles team for Daniel Hand and played very well together.
Hand stayed on the road to face Sacred Heart Academy on April 24, winning 6-1. Winning at singles were Haraj-Sai (7-5, 1-6, 1-0), Bradstreet (6-0, 6-0, her third shutout in a row), Lowy (6-0, 6-0, her second shutout in a row), and Lee (6-4, 6-1). The 1 doubles team of Rogers/Helfrich posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout, and 3 doubles partners Felgate prevailed 8-4.
