Grizzlies baseball sandwiched a loss between two wins last week, bringing their season record to 7-3. The team started the week traveling to New Haven on April 17, stealing a 10-4 win on the road over Wilbur Cross. On April 19, they returned home to host Notre Dame-West Haven in a 11-9 loss. Foran came to town on April 21, and the Grizzlies locked up a 10-6 victory.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Grizzlies girls’ lacrosse split the week with a loss at home and a win on the road. The team played host to East Lyme on April 19, falling in a narrow 10-9 defeat. On April 21, they hit the road to Fairfield to face Ludlowe, picking up a 13-8 victory. They are now 7-2 on the season.
Softball
Softball kicked off the week with two strong wins at home before stumbling on the road. The team played host to Career Magnet on April 17 in a 23-0 victory before hosting Shelton for a 22-2 win on April 19. They traveled to Milford on April 20 and fell to Law 4-0. The Grizzlies are now 7-3.
Boys’ Tennis
Boys’ tennis split the week, recording both a win and loss at home.
The team hosted Branford on April 18, earning a 4-3 victory. In singles, Nolan Stankawich recorded a 6-2 and 7-5 win, and Evan Stein won 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. In doubles, Max Benning and Pat Zhang won 6-0 and 6-1, Nate Grief and Logan Wertheim won two 6-3 matches, and Connor Mackenzie and Avyay Yarlagadda won 6-1, 3-6, 4-6.
On April 21, the Grizzlies hosted Fairfield Prep, falling 0-7.
On April 24, the Grizzlies traveled to Daniel Hand and took a 0-7 loss. The team is now 4-3 for the season.
Girls’ Tennis
Grizzlies girls’ tennis picked up a trio of wins over the past week, posting victories on the road and at home. The team traveled to Branford on April 18 in a 6-1 win and returned home on April 20 for a 6-1 win over Mercy. In the Branford match, wins came from Kallie Kagan (6-1, 6-1), Caroline Hergan (6-1, 6-0) and Molly Peterson (6-0, 6-0). For doubles, Izzy Bowman and Sophie Gochman grabbed two 6-2 wins. Thitida Khambounhounag and Peyton Lynch won 6-4, 6-1, and Kate DeAngelo and Mia Hardy grabbed a victory (6-0, 7-6, (7-0)).
Versus Mercy, Riley Mullett grabbed two 6-0 victories. Hergan also won 6-0, 6-0, as did Peterson and Olivia Cowperthwait in the No. 4 singles position. On the doubles side, Alexie Gipson and Gabby Kellner grabbed a victory (6-4, 3-6, 6-2). Kate Gasparani and Breann Shelton won 6-4, 6-2.
On April 24, the Grizzlies played host to Sheehan and grabbed a 5-2 victory. Mullett won 6-1 and 6-2. Kagan claimed 6-0 and 6-1 wins. Hardy at No. 3 singles won 6-3, 6-3. In the doubles portion of the competition, Bowman and Gochman won 6-3, 6-2, and Khambounhounag and Lynch won 6-1, 6-1. Guilford is now 8-1 on the season.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Boys’ lacrosse split the week, stealing a win on the road while falling at home. On April 20, the Grizzlies played host to Notre Dame in a 12-8 loss. They hit the road on April 22, defeating Waterford 14-2. The team is now 5-2 on the season.
Outdoor Track
The Guilford girls’ outdoor track team traveled to Bethel on April 22 for the Mongovan Invitational. Top performers included junior standout Clara Gahm, who took second place in the 1600 in 5:12.91 and third in the 3200 in 12:01.60. Senior co-captain Alexa Suchy took third in the 1600 in 5:22.81 and fourth in the 3200 in 12:01.70. Junior Juliana Montgomery was fourth in the 800 in 2:34.69. Sophomore Riley Hickey claimed fifth place in the 400 in 1:04.17.
The 4x800 relay team (Montgomery, Summer Mangan, Olivia Kaisin, Ana Sadlon) took home fourth place with a time of 10:49.10, and the 4x400 relay team (Maya Kos-Graham, Dani Selig, Agnes Batters, Hickey) placed third in 4:30.13. In the field events, sophomore Lily Sullivan placed third in high jump (4’4”) followed by senior Ella Esposito in fourth, also at 4’4”. Esposito placed sixth in the triple jump, with a jump of 28’9.5”.
Crew
On April 19, the Guilford boys’ and girls’ crew teams traveled to Old Lyme. The girls’ first varsity crews raced first, and saw the Lyme-Old Lyme boat steadily pull away over the 1,500-meter course for a two-boat length win.
The boys’ crew had a similar race, falling short of Lyme-Old Lyme crew by a little less than two boat lengths. The lone Guilford boat that emerged victorious was the girls’ novice four, defeating the Wildcats by three lengths. On April 22, the teams hosted Middletown. The Guilford boats performed very well on the 1,400-meter course.
The girls’ first varsity boat, which included senior captains Ashlyn Garrick, Hailey Hutchison, and Panorea Vasiliou, rowed well finishing in 5:51 to Middletown’s boat’s 6:09. The boys’ first varsity, led by senior captain Bradyn Benben and junior captain George Fenollosa, outpaced the Middletown boat by several lengths. The boys’ novice eight also rowed a solid race, finishing ahead of Middletown.
