Westbrook Girls’ Tennis Wins Two Straight, While Boys’ Tennis Goes 2-1

Baseball

Baseball’s tough season continued with the team picking up three more losses to add to its 1-8 record. They hosted Valley Regional on April 18 in a 22-0 loss. On April 20, they traveled to Clinton, falling to Morgan in a narrow 8-7 loss. They hosted Griswold on April 22 and recorded an 11-8 loss.

Boys’ Tennis

Boys’ tennis picked up a pair of wins last week. On April 18, the team hosted Coginchaug for a 6-1 victory. They traveled to New London on April 19 for a 6-1 victory before falling 5-2 at Suffield on April 21.

In the Suffield match, Elliot Koplas recorded a singles win (6-3, 6-3) and on the doubles side, Ryan Engels and John Freund recorded a victory (6-3, 5-7, 5-7).

Softball

Knights softball recorded three back-to-back losses last week, bringing the season record to 1-7. On April 18, the team traveled to Deep River in a 21-0 loss to Valley Regional. On April 20, they hosted Morgan in a 22-4 loss, and they took another 22-4 loss on April 21 at home against East Hampton.

Girls’ Tennis

Girls’ tennis added two more victories to its 7-1 season record, picking up a win at home and on the road.

On April 18, the Knights traveled to Coginchaug, earning a close 4-3 victory. Ava Ciarcia picked up a singles win (6-2, 6-1). Olivia Palumbo and Adriana Stranieri (6-0, 6-4) snagged a win in the first doubles spot. Wins also came from Giovanna Silva and Natalie Palumbo (6-2, 6-1) and Gabby Spash and Norah Hayden (6-2, 6-0).

They hosted Portland on April 21 in a 7-0 win. Meghan Bache picked up two 6-0 wins. Delaney Belcourt won two 6-1 sets and Ciarcia won 6-0 and 6-1. Caroline Dias won by default. For doubles, Palumbo and Stranieri won two 6-1 sets. Silva and Palumbo won 6-2 and 6-0. Spash and Hayden collected two 6-0 triumphs.

Outdoor Track

The Westbrook boys’ and girls’ outdoor track teams hosted Coginchaug and North Branford on April 19.

For the boys, Brandon Naccarato won the long jump (19’8”) and qualified for states. He also took first place in the 100 (11.24) and in the triple jump (37’3”) qualifying for Shorelines in that event. Michael VonEhr won the javelin (135’1”) qualifying him for both Shorelines and states.

Vincent Naccarato placed second in the javelin (120’ 9”) also qualifying for Shorelines. Vincent also qualified for Shorelines in the 100 meters with his time of 12.24. Hever Gomez also had a good day, placing first in the 110 meter hurdles and qualifying for Shorelines (18.94). The 4x100 relay team of Vincent Naccarato, John Grace, Gomez and Brandon Naccarato qualified for states with their first-place time of 45.6.

On the girls’ side, Ava Kaluski won the discus (56’1”). Mackenzie True qualified for Shorelines in both the long jump (14’10”, second place) and the 300 meter hurdles (second place, 57.04). Kayla Prisley placed third in both the 100 meters (13.74) and in the 200 meters (28.4) qualifying for states in the latter event. Lily Freeman claimed third place in the 800 meters (2:53.6).
