Valley Baseball, Girls’ Tennis Win Three Straight


Baseball

Warriors baseball picked up three back-to-back wins last week, bringing their overall season record to 6-4. On April 18, the team traveled to Westbrook for a convincing 22-0 victory. On April 20, they hosted Old Saybrook in a 11-1 win, and on April 22, the team traveled to Storrs to face Edwin O. Smith in a 9-1 victory.

Boys’ Lacrosse

Boys’ lacrosse suffered its fifth loss of the season, at home on April 18. They hosted Old Saybrook in a 13-2 loss. The team is now 2-5 for the season.

Boys’ Tennis

Boys’ tennis split the week, taking both a win on the road and a loss at home.

On April 18, they team hosted Cromwell in a 5-2 loss. In singles, Charlie Whelan won 6-0 and 6-1, and Shep Whitney won 7-6 and 10-7. They then grabbed a 7-0 win at Old Saybrook on April 21. Tomas Dahl won his singles matchup 6-0, 6-0. Aidan Garrity won 6-0 and 6-1 and Whelan grabbed two 6-0 victories. Whitney also snagged two 6-0 wins. Valley won all three doubles matchups by forfeit (Ed Johnson/Ryan Poulin, Willem Fitton/Nic Cartagena, and Jonathan Alberto/Jack Berardinelli).

Girls’ Lacrosse

The tough season continued for girls’ lacrosse. The Warriors took two road losses last week, bringing their overall season record to 0-5. On April 18, they traveled to Old Saybrook, taking a 23-6 defeat. On April 20, the team faced Somers on the road in a 20-5 loss.

Softball

Softball split the week, picking up a win and a loss at home. The team hosted Old Saybrook on April 18, earning a resounding 20-0 win. On April 22, they played host to visiting Somers, taking a 7-2 loss in the effort. The team is now 2-4 for the season.

Girls’ Tennis

Girls’ tennis took three straight wins last week. On April 18, the team traveled to Cromwell in a 5-2 win. In singles, Joanna Petrone won 6-6, 7-6 (7-5), and Natalie Novak won 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), forfeit. In doubles play, Samarah Shankar and Clara Shea won 6-4 and 6-3; Regan Grow and Alessia Pisanzio won 6-0 and 6-0. Ashley Cap and Fallyn Belisle won 6-2 and 6-1.

On April 19, the team traveled to North Branford for a 6-1 victory. In singles play, Petrone won 6-0 and 6-2, Novak won two 6-0 matches, and Hannah Schwartzman won 6-1 and 6-2. In doubles, Shankar and Shea and Grow and Pisanzio both won two 6-0 matches. Cap and Sophia Bonanno won 6-0 and 6-2.

On April 21, the Warriors hosted Old Saybrook in a 4-3 victory. In singles, Novak won 6-2 and by forfeit. In doubles, Shankar and Shea won two 6-1 matches. Grow and Pisanzio won two 6-0 matches, and Cap and Belisle won two 6-3 matches. The team is now 7-0 for the season.

Golf

On April 18, Valley golf traveled to Coginchaug and grabbed a win before defeating Morgan by a score of 183-194 at home on April 20. Tyler Ruel scored a 40 and Kevin King scored a 44. Jake McKenna added a 49 and Will Kelly contributed to the win with a 50. Braeden Nunes scored a 68.

Outdoor Track

On April 19, the Valley boys’ and girls’ track teams traveled to Old Saybrook for a tri-meet with the Rams and Old Lyme.

The boys’ team won its meet against Old Saybrook 72-62 and lost to Old Lyme 80-64. They saw some great individual performances from Jack Driscoll (first place in the high jump, 100 meters and 4x100 relay). Aidan Babek won the long jump.

Paul Giantonio finished second in the long jump, second in the high jump and was also a member of the 4x100 relay team that had a first place finish. McKinelly Hartt and Aidan Babek were also on the winning 4x100 meter team. Zach Scott won the 3200 meters for the Warriors. Zach was accompanied by Lyle Pitman, Avi Siegel and Kenny Batt for a first place finish in the 4x800 meter relay.

The girls’ team beat Old Lyme with a score of 80-58 but came out with a loss against Old Saybrook. They saw great individual performances from Maddie Riebold with wins in the 1600 meters and a strong performance in the 4x800 meters. Other notable performances included Sam Vile winning the javelin throw, and Cambell Massey with second place finishes in the 300 meter hurdles, pole vault and a gritty performance in the 100 meter hurdles. Audrey Board recorded a personal best 4’10 in the high jump.
