The Guilford softball team won its first four games, starting with a 5-0 shutout win at Daniel Hand on April 3. On April 5, the Grizzlies hosted Sheehan (9-3 victory) before taking another 9-3 win over Branford at home on April 6. Darien came to town on April 8, and Guilford won in blowout fashion by a score of 10-0.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Guilford girls’ lacrosse is off to a hot start to the season, winning its first four contests. On April 3, the Grizzlies defeated Mercy at home (17-2). They won again in blowout fashion on April 6 vs. Branford (17-4) before traveling to Fitch on April 8 and grabbing a 16-1 win. On April 10, Guilford defeated Lauralton Hall on the road by a score of 17-7.
Girls’ Tennis
Guilford girls’ tennis won its first match of the season at home on April 3 vs. Lauralton Hall by a score of 7-0. On April 4, the Grizzlies faced North Haven at home and grabbed a 6-1 victory before grabbing road wins over Fitch on April 6 (7-0) and Cheshire on April 10 (5-2).
In the Cheshire match, Alex Orlins (Cheshire) defeated Kallie Kagan (Guilford) 6-0, 6-0. Caroline Hergan (Guilford) took down Anja Josef (Cheshire) 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Molly Peterson (Guilford) grabbed a win over Aysa Tarabar (Cheshire) 6-1, 6-2, and Sophie Gochman (Guilford) beat Hailey Weissman (Cheshire) 7-5, 6-3. For doubles, Lila Watkinson/Riley Baldoni (Cheshire) earned a victory over Alexie Gipson/Gabby Kellner (Guilford) 7-6, 7-5. Kate DeAngelo/Mia Hardy (Guilford) defeated Julia Hummel/Rachel Golstein (Cheshire) 6-4, 7-5, and Kate Gasparini/Breann Shelton (Guilford) beat Lizzy Klem/Arya Desai (Cheshire) 6-2, 6-3.
Boys’ Tennis
The Grizzlies boys’ tennis team opened their season on April 3 with a 5-2 win at Hamden. For singles, Quinn Northrop (Hamden) won 6-4, 6-4 over Tomas Kharabadze. Nolan Stankewich (Guilford) defeated Nolan Jermaine 6-3,7-6 (7-2). Aryan Patel (Guilford) grabbed a 6-1, 6-2 win over Paras Dodd, and Anshul Deval (Hamden) won 3-6, 6-4, 10-3 over Avyay Yarlagadda. For doubles, Max Banning/Patrick Zhang (Guilford) won 6-0. 6-1 over Kaustov Mohanly/Dylan Groff. Logan Wertheim/Nate Grief (Guilford) took down Milo Kazmierczak/Lucian Gaetien 6-0, 6-0. Connor Mackenzie/Freddy Bonz (Guilford) grabbed a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Sean Dunkley/Aryan Singla.
Guilford then faced Sheehan at home on April 5 and won 6-1 before winning 7-0 on April 10 at Jonathan Law.
Baseball
Guilford baseball opened the season on April 3, taking a 3-0 win over Middletown. They then played host to Jonathan Law on April 5 and won a close 3-2 contest before defeating Morgan (17-5) on April 8.
On April 10, the Grizzlies hosted Daniel Hand and lost 2-0.
Boys’ Lacrosse
On April 4, the Guilford boys’ lacrosse team hosted Branford for their first game of the season. The Grizzlies collected a 16-5 victory. On April 8, they traveled to East Lyme and won by a score of 15-11.
Golf
The Guilford golf team played its first match of the season on April 3, defeating Notre-Dame West Haven at home by a score of 179-189. On April 6, the Grizzlies traveled to Hamden and won 174-187.
Outdoor Track
The Guilford outdoor track teams opened up their seasons on April 5 at Lyman Hall with Jonathan Law. On the girls’ side, the Grizzlies defeated Lyman Hall 110-32 and Jonathan Law 80.5-69.5. Top performers were junior Clara Gahm, who won the mile in 5:15 then helped pace teammates in the 800 and 3200 meters, while taking third in the 800 (2:39) and second in the 3200 (12:38). Junior Michaela Hogan was second in the 1600 in 6:16. Senior Ella Esposito had a personal best jump of 4’ 10” to win the high jump, followed by sophomore Lily Sullivan who took second in her personal best and state qualifying jump of 4’8”. Esposito also won the triple jump with a jump of 29’7.5”.
Sophomore Ana Sadlon won the 3200 in 12:35. Junior Tea Davison won the long jump in 14’3.5”. Sophomore Riley Hickey won the 400 in 63.2 and then tied for first with sophomore teammate Ella Heckler in the 200 in 28.7. Sophomore Daniella Selig took second in the 400 in 64.7. Sophomore Agnes Batters was second in the 300 hurdles in 53.9. Junior Juliana Montgomery won the 800 in 2:36, followed by freshman teammate Summer Mangan in 2:38. Closing the meet out was the 4x400 relay team (Heckler, Maya Kos-Graham, Batters, Hickey) which won in a time of 4:31.8.
For the boys, Guilford fell to Jonathan Law by a score of 881-67, and lost to Lyman Hall by a score of 77-71. Although Guilford lost to both teams, some athletes had impressive results. Andres Gutierrez won the 300 meter hurdles and triple jump, and Coleman Love won the 1600 meters and the 3200 meters.
Crew
Guilford rowing had its first race of the season on April 1 at home vs. East Lyme. With windy and rainy conditions facing both teams, the boys finished two lengths behind the East Lyme boys on the 1,400 meter course. In the girls’ varsity race, East Lyme also was too strong for Guilford, winning by a few boat lengths. East Lyme also defeated the Grizzlies in the second varsity and novice races.
