Old Saybrook Boys’ Lacrosse Grabs First Program Win at North Branford, While Softball Takes Two Losses

Old Saybrook baseball played its first game of the season On April 3, taking a 14-4 win at Westbrook. They then traveled to Portland on April 5 and lost 8-4 before narrowly losing 7-6 at Old Lyme on April 8.
Softball
The Old Saybrook/Westbrook softball team grabbed a commanding 27-9 win over Whitney Tech in the season opener at home on April 3. On April 5, they traveled to Old Lyme and lost 20-0 before taking a 25-1 loss at Hale Ray on April 6.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Old Saybrook boys’ lacrosse defeated North Branford for the first time in program history on April 4 on the road. This was the Rams’ first conference game victory in double overtime over the Thunderbirds.
Seven different Rams scored in the game and new goaltender Cole Lawson won in his first varsity outing. Wesley Percival went 55.6% on faceoffs while senior captains Aiden Gilson and Carson Percival each scooped up five ground balls apiece, with Gilson scoring his first varsity goal. Percival also tallied seven caused turnovers in the game. Liam Roberts scored the game-winner in the second overtime period. Attackman Brayden Cody had one goal and three assists. The final score of the contest was 8-7.
The Rams then took a 9-8 home loss vs. Morgan on April 6 and won 12-3 at Ledyard-Griswold on April 8.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Rams girls’ lacrosse took a 12-11 loss vs. North Branford at home on April 4, and then traveled to Morgan on April 6 where they won 14-8. In the North Branford game, goals were scored by Gretchen Kawecki (5), Laura Day (3) Juliette Condulis (1) Lila Cadley (1) and Maddie Beaudoin (1). Saves were recorded by Brianna Berdiales (5) and Cali Morelli (3).
Defenders Weston Richards (co-captain) and veteran from last season, sophomore Grace Desmond, along with freshman Kendall Dobratz and sophomore Sydney Webb, did well at preventing the North Branford offense from getting too close to the goal. Desmond and Dobratz were especially effective on ground ball scrums, interceptions, and clearing runs. Junior Varsity players sophomore Brooke Webb and freshmen Olive Egbert, Emma Wakelee and Kathryn DeMeulemeester also played in the game.
In the contest vs. Morgan, goals came from Kawecki (8, paired with 4 assists), Day (3, 3 assists), Kendall Dobratz (1), Beaudoin (1), and Condulis (1). Though not on the scoreboard, Ayla D’Anna and Cadley were very much in the game with heads-up ball control and settled offensive play. Berdiales recorded three saves and Morelli recorded five. The Rams’ defense of Richards, Desmond, Amelia Sigersmith and Maggie Ashe countered Morgan’s offense often enough to protect Old Saybrook’s lead.
On April 8, the Rams returned home to face Ledyard and lost 11-10. The Rams defense of Richards, Desmond, Sigersmith, and Ashe put up a sturdy wall against repeated Ledyard attacks on goal. Goalie Morelli registered four saves during the first half, and Berdiales accounted for two saves during the second half. On offense, Kawecki led the Rams scoring with five goals and three assists. Day and D’Anna each scored twice and assisted once. Dobratz also scored once.
Boys’ Tennis
Old Saybrook boys’ tennis took a 5-0 loss at Cromwell on April 3 to start the season. For Singles, Sharan Manick (Cromwell) defeated Daniel Steindl (Old Saybrook) 6-0, 6-0. Darragh McNeil (Cromwell) took down Brent Ling (Old Saybrook) 6-0, 6-0, and Gowrish Sriramalinga (Cromwell) grabbed a win vs. Joeseph Kelly (Old Saybrook) 6-0, 6-0. Finally, Thomas Gradzki (Cromwell) won by Forfeit. On the Doubles side, Thomas Garcia & Basim Shah (Cromwell) beat Carlos Velez & Jason Lee (Old Saybrook) 6-0, 6-0.
On April 6, the Rams traveled to Old Lyme and lost 7-0. For Singles, Cooper Munson took down Daniel Steindl 6-0, 6-0. Charles Hinckley beat Brent Ling 6-0, 6-0. Old Lyme’s Griffin McGlinchey recorded a win over Drew Demers 6-0, 6-0, and Andy Sicuranza grabbed a Forfeit Win. On the Doubles side, Micah Bass/Will Danes (old Lyme) defeated Carlos Velez/Jason Lee 6-0, 6-0. Leland Hine/Alis Bicic grabbed a Forfeit Win, as did Mason Wells/Aidan Kerrigan.
Girls’ Tennis
Rams girls’ tennis lost a close 4-3 contest at home vs. Cromwell on April 3. On April 6, they lost 7-0 vs. Old Lyme at home.
