The Valley Regional girls’ basketball team took a commanding 51-30 win over Granby on March 8 in the quarterfinals of the Class M State Tournament. Abby Bradbury recorded 16 points for the Warriors, while Regan Grow had 12. Lily Grow added nine points and Olivia Cunningham scored seven. Siena Schaller added three points to the win, and Sharmel Rivera and Elizabeth Allen each contributed two.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven boys’ ice hockey co-op team began state tournament play as the #13 seed on March 7, where they pulled off a 7-3 upset over #4 seed Guilford in the first round of the Division II State Tournament.
John D’Albero opened the scoring in the first period for East Haven, with Griffin McGlinchey on the assist, at the 8:40 mark. The Yellowjackets scored three goals in the second period. Tyler Weinzimmer knocked one in on an assist from Nick Perillo. D’Albero then found the net twice to record a hat trick in the contest. McGlinchey assisted on one score and the other one came unassisted. East Haven then scored another trio of goals in the third period. These goals were scored by Allan Schroeter (assisted by Nicolas Ruggiero), D’Albero (assisted by McGlinchey) and Perillo (unassisted). Jon-Paul Garea recorded 46 saves in net while allowing three goals.
On March 10, the Yellowjackets played in the quarterfinal round vs. North Branford, falling by a score of 3-1 to close out the season. John D’Albero scored an unassisted goal at the 0.57 mark of the third period. Jon-Paul Garea recorded 31 saves while allowing three goals.
Indoor Track
The Valley boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams had a very successful season. The goals for the season were for everyone to improve in their events, which they were able to do. Everyone was able to improve their individual performances during the winter. The team environment was good. They supported each other in their training sessions and events.
The 4x200 team of Clara Shea, Lily Frese, Abby Reardon, and Olivia Baldwin qualified for Shorelines and States. They worked hard on their handoffs, and they were able to improve their overall time during the season. Baldwin also qualified for States in the 300 meters. Campbell Massey and Kendall Costello both qualified for Shorelines in Pole Vault. Massey went on to qualify for States. They took advantage of the great weather and trained really hard with Coach Allegretti to improve their skills.
In the High Jump, McKinley Hartt, Aiden Babek, and Reagan Doyon also took advantage of the weather to work on their technique with Coach Allegretti, and all 3 qualified for Shorelines. Babek finished second in Shorelines and qualified for States. In the Long Jump, Delney Marsden worked hard and qualified for Shorelines in that event.
Madelyn Reibold qualified for States in the 1600, where she performed very well, recording a personal best during the state meet. Rowan Herlihy qualified for Shorelines in the 600 and the 1000, and she PR’d and qualified for States. Chris Lopez, Babek, and Hartt also worked very hard with Coach Seigel at Shot Put, all making big improvements during the season. Babek qualified for Shorelines in that event as well.
Aiden Babek was All-Shoreline Second Team in the High Jump. Babek and Reardon received the MVP awards this winter, and Clara Shea and Oliver Proctor received the Coaches Awards. Kendall Costello earned the honor of Most Improved and Rowan Herlihy received Best First Year.
The senior captains this season were senior Quentin Baron (300-1600-4x800), senior Olivia Baldwin and senior Reagan Doyon. Junior Aiden Babek and junior Abby Reardon were also on the leadership board. The returning athletes are sure to experience success in future seasons, and the coaches are looking forward to the growth of the program with the addition of incoming freshmen from John Winthrop Middle School.
