Old Saybrook boys’ basketball began Division V State Tournament play as the #8 seed, with a bye in the first round. On March 8, the Rams took on the #9 seed Coventry and won by a score of 60-47. Aaron Tolve led all scorers with 22 points, while point guard Brayden Cody had 18 points and Josh Lech added eight points. The Rams then traveled to Windsor Locks on March 10 for their first quarterfinals appearance since the 2017-2018 season. Old Saybrook’s season came to an end, as they fell by a score of 60-50.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven boys’ ice hockey co-op team began state tournament play as the #13 seed on March 7, where they pulled off a 7-3 upset over #4 seed Guilford in the first round of the Division II State Tournament.
John D’Albero opened the scoring in the first period for East Haven, with Griffin McGlinchey on the assist, at the 8:40 mark. The Yellowjackets scored three goals in the second period. Tyler Weinzimmer knocked one in on an assist from Nick Perillo. D’Albero then found the net twice to record a hat trick in the contest. McGlinchey assisted on one score and the other one came unassisted. East Haven then scored another trio of goals in the third period. These goals were scored by Allan Schroeter (assisted by Nicolas Ruggiero), D’Albero (assisted by McGlinchey) and Perillo (unassisted). Jon-Paul Garea recorded 46 saves in net while allowing three goals.
On March 10, the Yellowjackets played in the quarterfinal round vs. North Branford, falling by a score of 3-1 to close out the season. John D’Albero scored an unassisted goal at the 0.57 mark of the third period. Jon-Paul Garea recorded 31 saves while allowing three goals.
