North Haven Boys’ Ice Hockey Advances in States; Girls’ Basketball Falls in Quarterfinals
Girls’ Basketball
North Haven girls’ basketball picked up a pair of wins in the Class L State Championship. They defeated #24 ranked Maloney on Feb. 27, 57-28. Ava Halovatch led all scorers with 14 points; Julia Ball chipped in 13, and Ava Pap contributed 10 points. On March 2, the team took on eighth-ranked Bristol Central in a 58-46 victory. Their season came to an end on March 6, when they fell to #1 seeded Pomperaug by a score of 61-32 in the quarterfinals.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The North Haven boys’ ice hockey team began Division II State Tournament play as the #1 overall seed on March 7, grabbing a commanding 8-0 win over the #16 seed Sheehan. Alex Petersen recorded a hat trick in the contest (three goals scored) while Will Sullivan added two goals. Nolan Cole, Bryce Montabana, and Ben Gilbert each scored solo goals to help secure the victory. Bryce Petersen made 22 saves in net. On March 10, the Nighthawks traveled to Wesleyan University and grabbed a 5-2 quarterfinal win over the Hand Tigers. Alex Petersen and Sullivan each scored two goals, and Owen Quick also added a score of his own. Bryce Petersen picked up the win in net.
Fencing
The North Haven fencing team competed at the Individual State Championships on March 4. Anita Sajan and Jaden Nguyen were both All-State finishers for sabre.
