Valley Girls’ Basketball Grabs Conference Tournament Win, While Girls’ Ice Hockey Splits the Week
Girls’ Basketball
Girls’ basketball ended regular season play with a convincing 62-35 win over Morgan on Feb. 14, to end the regular season at 18-3. Olivia Cunningham recorded 23 points, while Abby Bradbury had 12. Regan Grow (10 points), Lily Grow (eight points) and Siena Schaller (five points) all contributed to the victory. Elizabeth Allen socred four points, as well. The girls were ranked #2 in the Shoreline Conference and faced seventh-ranked North Branford on Feb. 18 in a 83-54 victory in the conference tournament. Lily Grow recorded 32 points in the win, and Olivia Cunningham added 17 points. Elizabeth Allen chipped in 11 points, and Regan Grow added 10 points.
Boys’ Basketball
Warriors boys’ basketball took a win in its final regular season game, posting a 44-41 win over Morgan on Feb. 14. Brayden Shea led scoring for Valley with 16 points and three steals. Andrew Yermenson added 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Sam Hutchinson tallied nine points, seven rebounds, and five assists; and Connor Quinn added seven points. They ended the season 10-10.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op split the final week of regular season play, recording a win on the road and a loss at home. The team hit the road to face Amity-Cheshire-North Haven on Feb. 15 in a 7-4 victory, and they returned home on Feb. 18 to host Wilton/Norwalk/McMahon in a 7-4 loss. The team ended the regular season 11-7. They entered the SCC playoffs as the fourth-ranked team.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven boys’ co-op ice hockey team took a 2-2 tie on Feb. 15 at home against Watertown/Pomperaug. The visitors scored the first two goals in the first period, but East Haven’s John D’Albero converted a second period penalty shot, unassisted, to make the score 2-1. Michael Savo scored on a power play at the 7:17 mark of the third period to tie the game. The assist was credited to John D’Albero. Jon-Paul Garea recorded 43 saves in net while allowing the two goals. The team is 4-6-2 for the season.
