North Haven Girls’ Basketball Falls in SCC Tournament; Boys’ Hockey Continues To Dominate
Girls’ Basketball
The girls’ basketball team closed out its regular season 15-5 with a 61-30 win over Shelton on Feb. 13. Julia Ball recorded 17 points in the win. Ava Halovatch notched a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Sammi Santacroce chipped in 10 points, four assists, three steals, and two rebounds. The team headed into SCC tournament play as a #7 seed and faced 10th-ranked Amity Regional on Feb. 16. The Nighthawks took a 54-38 first-round victory behind 20 points from freshman Sammi Santacroce. Julia Ball tallied 17 points in the win.
The Nighthawks took a hard second-round loss on Feb. 18 against #2-ranked Sacred Heart Academy. Julia Ball recorded 15 points, and Christa Colonis chipped in nine points in the 76-56 loss.
Boys’ Basketball
The Nighthawks finished the season strong, recording a pair of back-to-back wins at home. The team hosted East Haven on Feb. 14 in a 63-48 victory. They closed regular season play with a narrow 49-46 win over Foran on Feb. 17. The team has clinched the #10 seed in SCC tournament play, and they ended the regular season with a 12-8 record.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Boys’ ice hockey continued its winning ways, recording two wins last week. They hosted Hand on Feb. 13 in a 6-1 win and took a 3-0 road victory over Sheehan on Feb. 18. In the win vs. Hand, Alex Petersen opened up the scoring for the Nighthawks at 0:21 of the first period, with assists going to Nolan Cole and Will Sullivan. Cole found the net in the second period, with Owen Quick and Tommy Guidone assisting. Quick scored an unassisted goal to make it 3-0, and Sullivan made it 4-1 off of a pass from Cole and Petersen. Cole scored his second goal of the game shortly after that, with assists being credited to Petersen and Sullivan. Finally, Ethan Buck closed out the scoring with his first goal of the season, with Andre Ohanyan and Will Keaney picking up the assists. Bryce Petersen recorded the win in net for North Haven.
In the road win over Sheehan, goals were scored by Jake Donovan (assisted by Tommy Guidone), Bryce Mastriano (assisted by Bryce Montabana and Guidone), and Nolan Cole on an empty-net goal (assisted by Will Sullivan and Alex Petersen). Bryce Petersen earned a shutout win in goal with 19 saves. The Nighthawks are 15-2 in regular season play.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Amity/Cheshire/North Haven girls’ ice hockey team fell in its penultimate game of the regular season, recording a 7-4 loss against the Daniel Hand co-op. The team is 0-19-1 for the season.
