Guilford Boys’ Basketball Grabs Two Wins; Boys’ Ice Hockey Collects a Victory
Boys’ Basketball
Grizzlies boys’ basketball put up a pair of wins to end a one-game skid in recent game play. The team hosted Fairfield Prep on Feb. 7. They suffered a narrow 67-64 defeat against the visitors. Senior Riley Swan put up 21 points in the loss. On Feb. 10, they played host to non-conference opponents Sheehan in a resounding 78-32 victory. Justin Hess led all scoring for Guilford with 18 points. The team hit the road on Feb. 13 to take on Canton in a 63-43 win. The Grizzles are 11-5 on the season.
Girls’ Basketball
It was a tough week for girls’ basketball, dropping all three of its games. The team traveled to West Haven on Feb. 7 in a 68-42 loss.
On Feb. 10, the team traveled to Shelton and recorded a 32-25 defeat, and on Feb. 11, the Grizzlies hosted Somers for a 46-36 loss. The team is 3-16 on the season.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Boys’ ice hockey locked down a conference win on Feb. 11, defeating Watertown/Pomperaug 4-2.
Sean McSweet recorded 23 saves, and Gabe Mongelli, Shane Considine, Will Petrick, and Sean Melvin all recorded goals in the victory. The team is now 6-3-1.
Indoor Track
The boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed at the Class L State Championship on Feb. 10. The girls took 16th place as a team. Clara Gahm took fifth place in the 1000 meters, with a time of 3:03.45. Alexa Suchy grabbed 10th place in the 1600 (5:33.88). Gahm (11:55.99) and Olivia Kaisin (12:01.99) took seventh and eighth place, respectively, in the 3200. Daniella Selig, Paige Ponzio, Kaisin and Suchy (10:10.25) placed fifth in the 4x800. On the boys’ side, Coleman Love took seventh place in the 1600 meters (4:41.29).
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Guilford girls’ ice hockey co-op came away with one win and a loss last week. On Feb. 10, the team hosted New Canaan in a 3-0 loss. They traveled to Hamden to take on Amity/Cheshire/North Haven on Feb. 10, recording a 3-2 victory. The team is 7-10 on the season.
