East Haven Girls’ Basketball Wins Two Straight, While Boys’ Hockey Stays Competitive


Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven boys’ ice hockey co-op split the week, earning a victory over Daniel Hand and stumbling in a tough overtime loss against Guilford. The team hosted Hand on Feb. 6 in the 3-0 victory. Goal scorers for the Yellowjackets were John D’Albero (two unassisted goals) and Allan Schroeter (unassisted). Jon-Paul Garea recorded

26 saves in net while allowing no goals. The team then set their sights on Guilford on Feb. 8, ultimately taking a 6-5 loss in overtime. In the contest, Michael Savo scored a goal assisted by Allan Schroeter at the 4:11 mark of the first period. In the second period, goals were scored by Savo (assisted by Schroeter again), Savo (recording a hat trick, assisted by D’Albero), and Nick Perillo (assisted by Griffin McGlinchey and D’Albero). In period three, Savo scored again, this time unassisted. Garea allowed six goals but recorded 38 saves. The Yellowjackets are now 4-7-1.

Boys’ Basketball

Boys’ basketball had a tough week, suffering two losses to bring their overall record to 4-13. The team traveled to Madison on Feb. 7. They fell to Hand 76-55. On Feb. 10, the Yellowjackets returned home to host Shelton in a non-conference matchup. The visitors defeated their hosts 75-43.

Girls’ Basketball

Girls’ basketball claimed a pair of victories in two tightly contested games. On Feb. 7, the team hosted Lyman Hall in a 30-28 victory. They hit the road on Feb. 10 to face Law, coming home with a 35-28 win. The Yellowjackets are now 12-7 for the season.

Girls’ Ice Hockey

The Guilford girls’ ice hockey co-op came away with one win and a loss last week. On Feb. 10, the team hosted New Canaan in a 3-0 loss. They traveled to Hamden to take on Amity/Cheshire/North Haven on Feb. 10, recording a 3-2 victory. The team is 7-10 on the season.

Indoor Track

On Feb. 11, several athletes from the boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed at the Class M State Championship. Angelina Buggati finished 21st in the shot put (28-09.00). Erica Canfield took 11th in the high jump (4-10.00) and 17th in the 300 meters (46.30). Jessica Urban took seventh in the high jump (4-10.00). For the boys, the 4x200 relay team, consisting of Tyler Varveris, Paul Carangelo, Niyel Cornelius, and Richard Ackom-Brew, finished in 15th with a time of 1:41.49. Dante Rodriguez claimed seventh place in the 600 meters (1:33.47), and Varveris took 11th place in the 300 meter run (39.32).
