Branford’s Indoor Track Teams Deliver at States; Boys’ Ice Hockey Grabs a Win
Boys’ Basketball
Boys’ basketball recorded a tough week, taking two losses against non-conference opponents. The team hosted Hamden on Feb. 7 in a 73-46 loss and then traveled to Madison on Feb. 10 for a 75-49 defeat vs. Daniel Hand. The Hornets are 4-11 for the season.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
Hornets boys’ ice hockey recorded a win on Feb. 11 over Daniel Hand at home. The 4-2 win brings the team to a 9-6 record for the season.
Girls’ Basketball
Girls’ basketball split the week, posting a win on the road and a home loss. The team traveled to Shelton on Feb. 6 for a resounding 69-33 victory. They returned home on Feb. 10 to host North Haven in a 75-35 defeat. The Hornets are now 6-13.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Daniel Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op took a loss on the road last week, falling to the Hamden co-op 5-0 on Feb. 8. The team is 10-6 for the season.
Indoor Track
The boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed at the Class M State Championship on Feb. 11. For the girls, top performances included Joelle Budz, who took seventh place in the 55 meters (7.60). Joelle has had an excellent indoor season, recording personal bests in the 55 and 300. She has qualified for the Indoor Nationals in March with her time in the 55. Chayse Gueco also finished with a time of 8.10 in the 55 meters. Gloriana Buckley took 10th in the 300 meters (45.26) and the 4x200 relay team of Gueco, Djamilla Tokour, Ella Stone and Buckley finished in 13th place with a team time of 1:56.91. Ella Stone also had a standout performance in the long jump (14’ 8”). The boys’ team came in 11th out of 30 teams, with a team score of 17.50 points. Top six finishers included Colin Donahoe in the 600 meters (1:24.11), taking second place. Ryder Kropiwnicki finished in second place in the pole vault (12’0) and Enaji Muhammad (5’8) came in fifth place in the high jump.
