Westbrook Co-op Boys’ Ice Hockey Wins Three Straight; Basketball Teams Face Struggles
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The Southington-Coginchaug-Westbrook boys’ ice hockey co-op secured its first three wins of the season last week. The team, now 3-12, picked up wins on Jan. 30 over the Rocky Hill Co-Op, 5-2, the Milford Co-op on Feb. 1, 6-3, and Wilton on Feb. 4, 8-3.
Girls’ Basketball
Girls’ basketball took two back-to-back losses. On Jan.31, the team traveled to Durham to face Coginchaug in a 60-21 conference defeat. They returned home to host Old Saybrook on Feb. 3, losing 46-34. The Knights are now 5-11.
Boys’ Basketball
The tough season continued for Westbrook boys’ basketball, picking up two more losses. The team was narrowly defeated at home by Coginchaug in a 53-51 loss on Jan. 31. Brandon Naccarato had 18 points, five rebounds and five assists. Vin Naccarato followed with 12 points and four rebounds, and Ryan Engles had eight points to go along with five assists and five rebounds. On Feb. 1, the Knights traveled to Old Saybrook for a 53-29 defeat. Brandon Naccarato had 17 points and five rebounds. The team is 1-15 on the season.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Daniel Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op collected two wins and a loss in recent action. On Feb. 1, the team traveled to Ridgefield in a loss against Wilton/Norwalk/McMahon. They bounced back on Feb. 3, traveling to face Woodstock Academy Co-op in a 4-2 victory. A second win came on the road on Feb.4 versus Stamford/Westhill/Staples, 4-3. The team is now 10-5 on the season.
Indoor Track
On Feb. 3, the Westbrook boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed in the Shoreline Indoor Track Championship. The girls’ team placed 12th overall, and the boys’ team placed ninth. Delaney Belcourt finished in seventh place in the 300 meter dash, with a time of 47.72. Halley Pierson took third in the girls’ pole vault and eighth in the long jump. For the boys, James Grace finished in second place in the 55 meter dash, recording a time of 6.78. Hever Gomez grabbed fourth place in the 55 meter hurdles (9.39). The 4x200 Relay team (Gomez, Grace, John Grace, and Derick Novillo) took fourth place, recording a time of 1:39.73.
