Valley Girls’ Basketball Breaks Even; Boys’ Basketball Goes Undefeated on the Week
Boys’ Basketball
Warriors boys’ basketball secured a couple of home victories, notching wins over North Branford and East Hampton. The team hosted North Branford on Jan. 31 and recorded a 63-45 win behind Sam Hutchinson’s 22 points and five rebounds. Andrew Yermenson contributed 13 points and seven assists; Di’Angelo Jean-Pierre collected 10 points, seven assists, and five steals; and Brayden Shea chipped in 10 points.
On Feb. 3, the Warriors played host to East Hampton in a 64-51 victory. The team was led by Connor Quinn’s 16 points, five assists, and three steals. Brayden Shea added 13 points, five rebounds, and five assists; Andrew Yermenson recorded 12 points, five rebounds, and five steals; Kevin King chipped in with 12 points; and Di’Angelo Jean-Pierre tossed in seven points to accompany his 10 assists and five boards.
The Warriors are 9-8 on the season.
Girls’ Basketball
The girls’ basketball team split the week, collecting both a win and a loss on the road. On Jan. 31, the team traveled to North Branford in a 73-56 victory. Abby Bradbury led the way for the Warriors with 34 points. Olivia Cunningham tallied 16 points and Lily Grow contributed 12 points. Elizabeth Allen also contributed six points, while Siena Schaller scored four points and Sharmel Rivera had one. The team traveled to East Hampton on Feb. 3, falling to the home team 44-39. Abby Bradbury led the way again, this time with 19 points. Lily Grow chipped in seven points, while Regan Grow and Elizabeth Allen each had four. Sienna Schaller scored three points in the loss, and Olivia Cunningham had two. The team now owns a 14-3 record.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven boys’ co-op ice hockey team took a 3-1 win over Sheehan on Feb. 1. Michael Savo opened up the scoring for the Yellowjackets, knocking one into the goal at the 9:34 mark of the first period, assisted by John D’Albero. Shortly after that, John D’Albero scored a goal of his own, this one unassisted, at the 1:21 mark to give East Haven a 2-0 lead. In the second period, Sheehan got on the board at the 8:30 mark, but Michael Savo scored his second goal of the game at 4:09. Jon-Paul Garea recorded 25 saves in net while giving up one score.
The Yellowjackets then faced conference opponent Lyman Hall on Feb. 4. They traveled to Wallingford for a 2-1 victory. In the first period, Josh Salvati got East Haven on the board first, with a goal assisted by Tyler Weinzimmer at the 2:52 mark. Lyman Hall tied the game with 14:00 to go in the second period, but it didn’t last long, as East Haven senior forward Joey Vocatura sealed the victory with a go-ahead goal at the 1:33 mark of the period, assisted by John D’Albero. Jon-Paul Garea allowed one goal on 39 saves in net. The Yellowjackets’ record now sits at 3-6-1.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Daniel Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op collected two wins and a loss in recent action. On Feb. 1, the team traveled to Ridgefield in a loss against Wilton/Norwalk/McMahon. They bounced back on Feb. 3, traveling to face Woodstock Academy Co-op in a 4-2 victory. A second win came on the road on Feb.4 versus Stamford/Westhill/Staples, 4-3. The team is now 10-5 on the season.
Indoor Track
On Feb. 3, the Valley Regional boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed at the Shoreline Indoor Track Championship, where the girls’ team placed 11th overall, and the boys placed 12th. Olivia Baldwin placed fifth in the 300 meter dash, with a time of 47.22. Rowan Herlihy placed ninth in the 1000 meters, recording a time of 3:27.63. Delny Marsden finished in second place in the long jump (12-07.00). For the boys, Zachary Scott took seventh in the 3200 (11:29.77). Aidan Babek finished second in the high jump (5-08.00) and ninth in Shot Put (33-10.00).
