Old Saybrook Girls’ Basketball Snags Back-to-Back Wins; Indoor Track Competes at Conference Championship
Boys’ Basketball
The Old Saybrook boys’ basketball team bounced back with a win on Feb. 3 after posting two losses earlier in the week. On Jan. 31, the team hosted Hale Ray, recording a 58-43 loss. In the contest, Josh Lech had 13 points, Aaron Tolve had 12 points, Noah Hubbard had eight points, and Brendan Cassella had seven points.
The Rams hit the road on Feb. 2, traveling to Colchester to face Bacon Academy in a 59-32 defeat. Aaron Tolve led the scoring for Old Saybrook with 10 points, and Josh Lech followed with seven. Old Saybrook returned home on Feb. 3 for a bounceback win against neighboring Westbrook. They defeated the visitors 53-29. Aaron Tolve had 20 points and five rebounds, Josh Lech had 11 points and three rebounds, and sophomore Wes Percival had 10 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Noah Hubbard had five points and two rebounds, while Brendan Cassella added six rebounds and three assists. The Rams, although currently missing starting point guard Brayden Cody, starting forward London Sweeney, and starting center Auggie Albert, all to injury, are now 11-5 for the season.
Girls’ Basketball
Rams girls’ basketball recorded back-to-back wins on the road against two conference opponents. The team traveled to Moodus on Jan. 31 to face Hale Ray in a 62-41 victory before heading to Westbrook for a 46-34 win. They are now 10-7 on the season.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Daniel Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op collected two wins and a loss in recent action. On Feb. 1, the team traveled to Ridgefield in a loss against Wilton/Norwalk/McMahon. They bounced back on Feb. 3, traveling to face Woodstock Academy Co-op in a 4-2 victory. A second win came on the road on Feb.4 versus Stamford/Westhill/Staples, 4-3. The team is now 10-5 on the season.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven boys’ co-op ice hockey team took a 3-1 win over Sheehan on Feb. 1. Michael Savo opened up the scoring for the Yellowjackets, knocking one into the goal at the 9:34 mark of the first period, assisted by John D’Albero. Shortly after that, John D’Albero scored a goal of his own, this one unassisted, at the 1:21 mark to give East Haven a 2-0 lead. In the second period, Sheehan got on the board at the 8:30 mark, but Michael Savo scored his second goal of the game at 4:09. Jon-Paul Garea recorded 25 saves in net while giving up one score. The Yellowjackets then faced conference opponent Lyman Hall on Feb. 4.
They traveled to Wallingford for the 2-1 victory. In the first period, Josh Salvati got East Haven on the board first, with a goal assisted by Tyler Weinzimmer at the 2:52 mark, Lyman Hall tied the game with 14:00 to go in the second period, but it didn’t take long, as East Haven senior forward Joey Vocatura sealed the victory with a go-ahead goal at the 1:33 mark of the period, assisted by John D’Albero. Jon-Paul Garea allowed one goal on 39 saves in net. The Yellowjackets’ record now sits at 3-6-1.
Indoor Track
The Old Saybrook boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field teams competed in the Shoreline Indoor Track Championship on Feb. 3. The girls placed second overall as a team, and the boys placed sixth. Abigail Colella won the 55 meter dash for the girls (7.37) and also the 300 (44.02). Erin Nygard took fifth in the 600 (1:50.02), and Catherine Minegar came in second in the 1000 (3:11.49). Carlina Castro’s time in the 1600 was 5:51.76, good enough for fourth place. Scarlett Pauloski and Christina Grace took fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 55 meter hurdles. In the 4x200 relay, Talia Bauer, Madelyn Beaudoin, Colella, and Avery Rueckert (1:50.93) came in first place. Lauren Dobratz grabbed first place in the high jump. On the boys’ side, Jacob DeAngelo claimed fifth place in the 600 meters (1:30.95). Parker Cook and Everett Miller took fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 1000. The 4x200 relay team of Aiden D’Anna, Cameron DeAngelo, Jacob DeAngelo, and Tyler Milardo-Denler, took third place (1:38.38). The 1600 sprint medley team (Parker Cook, Cameron DeAngelo, D’Anna, and Logan Worman) finished in second place, with a time of 4:03.70. Milardo-Denler also won the pole vault, and Bardh Thaci won the shot put.
