North Branford Boys’ Basketball Has a Tough Week; Fencing Shows Improvement


Boys’ Basketball

The boys’ basketball team had a tough week, recording two losses in conference play. They hosted Valley Regional on Jan. 31, taking a loss to the visitors 63-45. On Feb. 3, the T-Birds traveled to Cromwell and recorded a 54-37 loss. They are now 5-12 for the season.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The North Haven/East Haven/North Branford/Guilford boys’ swimming and diving team recorded a pair of losses last week. They hosted Fairfield Prep on Jan. 31. The team lost to the visitors 97-84. In the meet, Aiden Cohen won the 50 Freestyle, recording a time of 23.40, and Christian Butler’s 261.80 Diving score secured a first-place finish. William Cong gave the Warriors a victory in the 100 Breaststroke, racing a time of 1:08.15, and the 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of Josue Bravo, Sam Mayo, Lucas Espinosa, and Joey Gould, finished with a first-place time of 3:50.85.

On Feb. 2, the team traveled to Hamden, losing 97-86. Winners for the Warriors included Aiden Cohen in the 50 freestyle (23.66), Christian Butler in the 1 meter dive (263.35), and Spencer Carroll in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.88). Aiden Cohen, William Cong, Joey Gould, and Josue Bravo competed in the 400 freestyle relay, winning the race with a time of 3:44.25. The Warriors are now 4-3 on the season.

Girls’ Basketball

Thunderbirds’ girls basketball had a challenging week at home, posting two losses and a win. The team hosted Valley Regional on Jan. 31 and fell to the visitors 73-56. Portland came to town on Feb. 1 in a 59-28 win for the T-Birds. They played host to Cromwell on Feb.3, taking a 62-46 defeat. The team is now 7-10 on the season.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

Boys’ ice hockey hosted a pair of home games, taking both a tie and loss in the matchups. On Feb. 1, they hosted Cheshire in a narrow 5-4 loss. Jake Pederson opened the scoring for the T-Birds, with a goal assisted by Michael Matteo just 37 seconds into the game. Jack Maley added two goals in the contest, and CJ Sherwood added one. The team posted a 3-3 tie in the Feb. 4 game against Watertown/Pomperaug. The T-Birds are now 5-6-2.

Fencing

On Jan. 31, the T-Birds fencing team competed in a tri-meet with Cheshire and Daniel Hand, showing significant improvement from their first encounter with those teams on Jan. 12. The mens’ Epee squad beat Cheshire 6-3 and fell 3-6 to Hand. Newly uniformed rookie Jayden Rivera fenced the first nine bouts of her career for the women.

Indoor Track

The North Branford boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed in the Shoreline Indoor Track Championship on Feb. 3, where the girls’ team placed eighth overall, and the boys’ team placed 10th. Destiney Christie placed fifth in the 55 meter dash (7.91), and Payton Kamienski finished in third in the 600 meters (1:46.45). The girls’ 1600 sprint medley relay team (Sophie Gambardella, Christie, Samantha Ferraro, and Kamienski) placed third (4:56.08). Carmela Carbone took fourth (J4-04.00) in the high jump. For the boys, Sam Gott took fourth in the 55 meters (6.83) and also won the 300 meters (36.80). Aidan Chittenden took fifth in the shot put (38-01.00).
