Morgan Boys’ Basketball Goes Over .500, While Girls’ Basketball Faces a Bump


Boys’ Basketball

The boys’ basketball team tallied a pair of wins and a loss last week. On Jan. 31, the Huskies hosted Cromwell in a 44-33 loss. They rebounded on Feb. 2 in a home victory over East Hampton by a score of 83-71. On Feb. 3, the team posted a 63-57 win over Haddam-Killingworth. The Huskies are now 11-5.

Girls’ Basketball

Huskies girls’ basketball had a tough week, taking a pair of losses on the road. On Jan. 31, the team traveled to Cromwell for a conference game and fell 52-32. The team returned to the road on Feb. 3 for a game at Haddam-Killingworth, recording a 49-39 loss. The team is now 7-10 for the season.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The East Haven boys’ co-op ice hockey team took a 3-1 win over Sheehan on Feb. 1. Michael Savo opened up the scoring for the Yellowjackets, knocking one into the goal at the 9:34 mark of the first period, assisted by John D’Albero. Shortly after that, John D’Albero scored a goal of his own, this one unassisted, at the 1:21 mark to give East Haven a 2-0 lead. In the second period, Sheehan got on the board at the 8:30 mark, but Michael Savo scored his second goal of the game at 4:09. Jon-Paul Garea recorded 25 saves in net while giving up one score. The Yellowjackets then faced conference opponent Lyman Hall on Feb. 4.

They traveled to Wallingford for a 2-1 victory. In the first period, Josh Salvati got East Haven on the board first, with a goal assisted by Tyler Weinzimmer at the 2:52 mark, Lyman Hall tied the game with 14:00 to go in the second period, but it didn’t take long, as East Haven senior forward Joey Vocatura sealed the victory with a go-ahead goal at the 1:33 mark of the period, assisted by John D’Albero. Jon-Paul Garea allowed one goal on 39 saves in net. The Yellowjackets’ record now sits at 3-6-1.

Indoor Track

The Morgan boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field teams competed in the Shoreline Indoor Track Championship on Feb. 3. The girls’ team placed sixth overall, and the boys’ team came in 10th. Logan Pernal came in fourth in the girls’ 55 meter dash, recording a time of 7.87. Julia White took third in the 300 meters, with a time of 45.96. Brooke Carlisle had a third place finish in the 55 meter hurdles (10.01). Gabriella Navarra also took third place in the long jump (12-06.00), and the 4x200 relay team, consisting of Pernal, Carlisle, Emily Smith, and White, finished the race at 1:57.51, grabbing third place. For the boys, Sebastian Kadlof took eighth in the 600 Meters (1:31.83). Michael Fusco, Kadlof, Carlos Oliva, and Seamus Staunton grabbed seventh place in the 4x200 relay (1:42.98). The same foursome took second place in the 4x400 relay. Oliva also snagged fourth place in the long jump, and Ravi Kadel took eighth place in the shot put.
