East Haven’s boys’ basketball posted a pair of losses last week, changing their record to 4-11 on the season. The Yellowjackets recorded a 75-48 loss to Hamden on the road on Jan. 31 and an 85-71 loss to Hillhouse at home on Feb. 3.
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The North Haven/East Haven/North Branford/Guilford boys’ swimming and diving team recorded a pair of losses last week. They hosted Fairfield Prep on Jan. 31. The team lost to the visitors 97-84. In the meet, Aiden Cohen won the 50 freestyle, recording a time of 23.40, and Christian Butler’s 261.80 diving score secured a first-place finish. William Cong gave the Warriors a victory in the 100 breaststroke, racing a time of 1:08.15, and the 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of Josue Bravo, Sam Mayo, Lucas Espinosa and Joey Gould, finished with a first-place time of 3:50.85.
On Feb. 2, the team traveled to Hamden, losing 97-86. Winners for the Warriors included Aiden Cohen in the 50 freestyle (23.66), Christian Butler in the 1 Meter Dive (263.35), and Spencer Carroll in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.88). Aiden Cohen, William Cong, Joey Gould, and Josue Bravo competed in the 400 freestyle relay, winning the race with a time of 3:44.25. The Warriors are now 4-3 on the season.
Girls’ Basketball
The Yellowjackets girl’s basketball team continued its skid, putting up two losses last week. On Jan. 31, the team hosted non-conference opponent West Haven, recording a 64-25 loss. They traveled to Woodbridge for an out-of-conference match-up with Amity Regional on Feb. 3, falling to the home team 50-41. The team is now 10-7 on the season.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The East Haven boys’ co-op ice hockey team took a 3-1 win over Sheehan on Feb. 1. Michael Savo opened up the scoring for the Yellowjackets, knocking one into the goal at the 9:34 mark of the first period, assisted by John D’Albero. Shortly after that, John D’Albero scored a goal of his own, this one unassisted, at the 1:21 mark to give East Haven a 2-0 lead. In the second period, Sheehan got on the board at the 8:30 mark, but Michael Savo scored his second goal of the game at 4:09. Jon-Paul Garea recorded 25 saves in net while giving up one score.
The Yellowjackets then faced conference opponent Lyman Hall on Feb. 4. They traveled to Wallingford for a 2-1 victory. In the first period, Josh Salvati got East Haven on the board first, with a goal assisted by Tyler Weinzimmer at the 2:52 mark, Lyman Hall tied the game with 14:00 to go in the second period, but it didn’t take long, as East Haven senior forward Joey Vocatura sealed the victory with a go-ahead goal at the 1:33 mark of the period, assisted by John D’Albero. Jon-Paul Garea allowed one goal on 39 saves in net.
The Yellowjackets’ record now sits at 3-6-1.
Wrestling
The East Haven wrestling team faced New Haven on the road on Feb. 1, walking away with a commanding 67-9 victory. Jack Batista-Fletcher won the 113-pound bout, defeating Isaac Dones by pin (2:28). Chris Doheny fell to New Haven’s Ja-sire Williams in the 126-pound contest by a 6-3 decision. Maddie Cooper collected a victory in the 132-pound bout, defeating Nicole Messam by an 8-6 decision. Alex Dombrowksi also collected a win for the Yellowjackets, this time in the 152-pound bout, as Alex won by a 13-5 major decision. Zander Molster (East Haven) won the 182-pound bout by pin, and Joshua Rivera took a loss by pin (3:12) to New Haven’s Justin Bonilla at 285 pounds.
Indoor Track
The East Haven girls’ and boys’ indoor track and field teams competed in the SCC Indoor Track Championships on Feb. 4, a meet in which the girls’ team took 18th place overall. Jessica Urban was a standout in the meet, as she placed seventh in the 55 meter hurdles (9.92) and sixth in the high jump. Angelina Bugatti finished in 10th place in the shot put. On the boys’ side, Dante Rodriguez came in 10th place in the high jump and 13th place in the 600 meter run (1:33.47).
