Hornets’ boys’ basketball split the week, taking a win on the road and a loss at home. The team traveled to New Haven on Jan. 31 to take on Career Magnet in a 64-43 victory. They returned home on Feb. 3 for a non-conference match-up with Fairfield Prep, falling to the visitors 79-52. They are now 4-10 on the season.
Girls’ Basketball
The girls’ basketball team faced a tough week, recording two losses and a win over non-conference opponents. The team hosted neighboring Guilford on Jan. 31, losing 38-27. Looking to turn things around, they hit the road to play Waterford, earning a 70-54 victory, before heading to Milford to face Lauralton Hall in a 74-43 loss on Feb. 3. The team is now 5-12.
Boys’ Ice Hockey
The Hornets skated to victory twice last week, recording victories over top-ranked North Haven on Feb.1 and the Eastern CT Eagles on Feb. 4. The team defeated North Haven in a 3-2 contest, handing the visiting team its first loss of the season. On Feb. 4, Branford edged out the Eastern CT Eagles, 6-5 at home. They are now 8-6 on the season.
Girls’ Ice Hockey
The Daniel Hand girls’ ice hockey co-op collected two wins and a loss in recent action. On Feb. 1, the team traveled to Ridgefield in a loss against Wilton/Norwalk/McMahon. They bounced back on Feb. 3, traveling to face Woodstock Academy Co-op in a 4-2 victory. A second win came on the road on Feb.4 versus Stamford/Westhill/Staples, 4-3. The team is now 10-5 on the season.
Indoor Track
The Branford boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed in the SCC Indoor Track Championship on Feb. 4. Both teams produced some standout performances. The girls’ team came in 13th place overall, with a few girls recording their personal best times. Top performances included Joelle Budz in the 55 meter run. She recorded a personal best time of 7.55, finishing in fourth place. Budz also finished in seventh place in the 300, with a personal best time of 44.15. Glorianna Buckley came in shortly after her in ninth place, recording a personal best time of 44.60. In the 600 meters, Tess Wasiolek took sixth place (1:47.68), and Lila Wasiolek was 16th (1:55.44). Lila’s time was a personal best, as well. Ella Stone recorded a personal best score in the long jump (16’4.50:), good enough to take fourth place, and she also finished in 14th in the high jump (4’4”, personal best). Taylor Tracy collected a personal best score (25’1”) in the shot put and placed 17th. The boys’ team finished in 11th place overall but had standout accomplishments, as well. Colin Donahoe earned First Team All-SCC honors in the 600 meters, recording a time of 1:25.57. Ryder Kropiwnicki’s 13’0 pole vault score earned him Second Team accolades. Both coaches expressed how proud they were of their teams after the meet.
