Yellowjackets Boys’ Hockey Fights to the Finish
On Jan. 26, the East Haven boys’ ice hockey co-op team faced Masuk at home, losing a back-and-forth contest by a score of 5-3.
To open the scoring, Tyler Weinzimmer (Morgan) took a pass from Cameron Lacroix (East Haven) and Dylan Ingram (Valley Regional) into the net at the 0:55 mark of the first period to get the Yellowjackets on the board. At 7:27, Joe Vocatura (East Haven) found Allan Schroeter (East Haven), who knocked it into the net to give East Haven an early 2-0 lead.
At the 13:35 mark of the period, Andrew Scalla got Masuk on the board with an unassisted power play goal. Scalla then quickly scored another goal on the Power Play, also unassisted, at the 14:38 mark. The game was tied 2-2 heading into the locker room.
Masuk continued its momentum into the second period, as Angelo Michetti found the net, on assists from Austin Braiewa and Colin Deering, at the 4:09 mark.
Andrew Scalla recorded a hat trick at the 4:58 mark of the period, scoring his third unassisted goal of the game. He also added on another score at the 14:21 mark, this time shorthanded, to make it a 5-2 game. Austin Braiewa was credited with the assist.
While the Yellowjackets were in the Power Play, Griffin McGlinchey (Old Lyme), with assists from Michael Savo (East Haven) and Dylan Ingram, scored a goal at the 14:40 mark of the second, making it a 5-3 game.
The third period was all defense, as both teams held each other scoreless.
Jon-Paul Garea (East Haven) took the loss in net for East Haven but recorded 35 saves while giving up five goals.
On Jan. 28, the Yellowjackets took to the road to face SGWL, this time winning by a score of 5-3.
The first period was all East Haven, as John D’Albero (East Haven) scored at the 10:40 and 28.1 marks, respectively. His first goal was assisted by Cameron Green (East Haven) and Nicolas Ruggiero (East Hampton). His second goal was assisted by Griffin McGlinchey and Michael Savo.
D’Albero didn’t take long to record a hat trick in the contest, as he scored an unassisted power play goal at the 14:13 mark of the second period, giving the Yellowjackets a 3-0 lead. SGWL answered with a power play goal of their own at the 11:07 mark of the period. This was scored by Henery Klavana, assisted by Austin Renggli. Tyler Weinzimmer added another score for East Haven at the 9:17 mark of the second period. He knocked in a Power Play goal, with Allan Schroeter on the assist.
The third period was also very back and forth, as Will Fleischer (Valley Regional) found the net on assists from Ben Frazier (Old Lyme) and Josh Salvati (East Haven) at the 5:30 mark. SGWL then followed with two goals, at the 26.8 and 6.2 marks, to make it a 5-3 game.
Jon-Paul Garea recorded 12 saves in goal for the Yellowjackets while giving up two goals. Teammate Chris Anderson (Old Lyme) allowed one goal on zero saves.
The Yellowjackets are now 6-5-1 on the season and will next face Sheehan at home on Wednesday, Feb. 1 (after press time) and Lyman Hall on the road on Saturday, Feb. 4.
