Yellowjackets Boys’ Hockey Takes Tie, Defining Win
The East Haven co-op boys’ ice hockey team moved to 5-4-1 after posting a home tie on Jan. 21 after taking both a loss and a win on the road earlier in the week.
The Yellowjackets took to the road on Jan. 16 to face Westhill/Stamford, where they suffered a 4-2 loss in the contest.
At 14:30 of the first period, Anthony Corelli opened up the scoring for Westhill/Stamford with an unassisted goal. Tyler Weinzimmer evened the score with 3:53 to go, as he knocked in a Power Play goal, assisted by John D’Albero. The teams went into the locker room with a 1-1 tie.
Westhill/Stamford scored two goals in the second period while keeping East Haven off the board. James Leydon knocked the puck in at 12:44, with assists going to Thomas Waterbury and Owen Van Dusen.
At 1:19, Anthony Corelli scored his second goal of the game, this time assisted by James Leydon.
The third period opened up with Anthony Corelli finding the net for a third time at the 8:20 mark to record a hat trick. This goal was unassisted.
John D’Albero, on a pass from Shane Ruggiero, scored at the 3:21 mark to make it a 4-2 final score.
Jon-Paul Garea recorded 33 saves in net for the Yellowjackets while allowing four goals.
East Haven then traveled to Milford to take on its co-op team on Jan. 18. The Yellowjackets recorded a dominant 7-1 win on the road.
The first period scoring opened up at the 11:59 mark, with Nicolas Ruggiero knocking the puck in for the Yellowjackets on a pass from Cameron Green. At the 2:42 mark, Connor Chirico of Milford scored a short-handed goal, unassisted, to even the contest.
With 0:36 to go, Michael Savo gave the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead on the power play, with Allan Schroeter recording the assist.
The second period began in a tight contest, but it was all East Haven on offense to gain a comfortable lead.
John D’Albero scored at the 14:42 mark, with Michael Savo and Tyler Weinzimmer on the assist. Cameron Lacroix followed at the 6:52 mark with a score assisted by Griffin McGlinchey.
Michael Savo scored his second goal of the game for East Haven, an unassisted goal, with 4:48 remaining in the period.
East Haven took a 5-1 lead to the third period and added on two more scores, capitalizing on a dominant performance.
With 14:17 to go in the game, Griffin McGlinchey found the net, with John D’Albero and Michael Savo on the assists.
Michael Savo, who was all over the board in the matchup, completed a hat trick at the 12:44 mark of the third period, scoring an unassisted goal.
Jon-Paul Garea allowed just one goal on 15 saves in the contest.
The Yellowjackets returned home to face a strong North Branford Thunderbirds team on Jan. 21. It was the tale of two great defenses, resulting in a 1-1 tie.
Michael Savo opened up the scoring in the first period with a goal at the 14:19 mark, assisted by John D’Albero and Griffin McGlinchey.
CJ Sherwood of North Branford evened the score for the T-Birds at the 5:29 mark of the second period. Chico Jara was credited with the assist.
The third period was all defense on both sides, as neither team was able to score.
The game ended 1-1 after a hard-fought battle from both teams.
Jon-Paul Garea recorded 39 saves in net for East Haven while allowing the one score.
The Yellowjackets will take on Lyman Hall on the road on Saturday, Feb. 4, before returning home to host Daniel Hand on Monday, Feb. 6.
