Grizzlies’ Boys Hockey Takes First Loss

The Guilford boys’ ice hockey team has had a really strong start to the season. Hoping to continue that streak, the Grizzlies traveled to Wethersfield on Jan. 9, taking their first loss of the season, 10-3.

The first period was all Wethersfield, as they scored four straight goals. At the 13:50 mark, Anthony Ruck started it off on an assist from Ben Caufield.

Shortly after that, Nathan Odell took a pass from Anthony Ruck and knocked it into the goal at the 11:04 mark. At 10:26, Sean Millen and Duke Nower linked up for the score. Anthony Ruck scored his second goal of the game, this time unassisted, at the 9:13 mark.

In the second period, Anthony Ruck recorded a hat trick, finding the net on a pass from Sean Millen. This happened at the 13:55 mark of the period. Guilford got themselves on the board at the 10:40 mark, with a goal courtesy of Jacob Corso. Brady Raffone was credited with the assist. Raffone then scored a goal of his own at the 9:25 mark, with Shane Considine assisting.

Wethersfield scored two more goals in the period, at the 8:58, 5:12, and 1:16 mark, respectively. Jake Kulvinskas scored unassisted, followed by an unassisted goal by Jack Millen, and Anthony Ruck topped it off on a pass from Clayton Shurdo.

The Eagles recorded two more goals in the final period. At the 8:30 mark, Dom DiCioccio scored an unassisted goal. Anthony Ruck, who had a superior day, took a pass from Brady Quinn into the net at the 3:39 mark.

Coach Russo acknowledged that Wethersfield is a strong team that was able to dominate throughout the game.

“Wethersfield showed us they are a good team,” Coach Russo said. “We needed to compete a lot more if we wanted success in this game and we came up short. We played some big emotional SCC games last week and didn't play with focus and energy in this contest. We may want to learn from this because we may face this type of schedule at the end of the season into the playoffs.”
