North Haven Wrestling Wins First Ever Home Match
The North Haven wrestling team, although in its first season, is starting to find success on the mat. On Jan. 11, the Nighthawks hosted their first ever home match, facing New Haven and earning a 54-23 win.
Winning wrestlers for the Nighthawks included Nathan Ruggiero at 170 pounds, Christian DeMaio at 182 pounds, Owen Lin at 220 pounds, Mike Moran at 160 pounds, and Yaseen Mahmoud at 170 pounds. The team is now 4-8 on the season, and as a squad, they are very excited for the future of the program.
On Jan. 14, North Haven competed at the Ellis Tech Duals, with seven other teams in attendance. The Nighthawks went 3-1 at the invitational, with a third place finish, and now have an overall record of 7-9 on the season.
North Haven went head-to-head with Waterford, losing by a score of 54-24. The Nighthawks defeated Bacon Academy, 42-35, and Ellis Tech 48-36. North Haven also came out with a victory vs. Middletown, by a score of 42-36.
Overall, Mike Moran (160 pounds) had a great day, going 3-0 with three pins. Tyler DiMauro (182/195 pounds) and Emilio Crocco (138 pounds) both had two wins and they were all pins. Freshman Hayden Minns wrestled very tough all day at 126 pounds, and contributed with a pin against Waterford.
In the win against Bacon Academy, Crocco had a pin, as did Luke Asbury (152 pounds), Christian DiMaio (182 pounds), and Tyler DiMauro. Mason Mansur (106 pounds) and Rob Richitelli (132 pounds) had very important victories by decision that sealed the win for North Haven. Richitelli was losing for most of the match, but battled back to take a 10-7 decision.
In the match against Ellis Tech, Crocco, Moran, and DiMauro led the team with their pins.
In the final match against Middletown, sophomores Elijah Ellis (170 pounds) and Joe Carbone (Heavyweight) had crucial pins that put the Nighthawks ahead. Junior Owen Lin sealed the deal with a big pin at 195 pounds.
