Grizzlies Send Several Competitors to the State Open
The Guilford girls’ swimming and diving team was well-represented when the State Open Championship took place last week. The Grizzlies finished in 20th place by recording a team score of 99 points for the State Open at Yale University on Nov. 20.
Guilford’s 200 medley relay team of junior Sorina Cheng, senior Rylan Jacobson, sophomore Kate Young, and freshman Aislin Cohen finished in 12th place by recording a time of 1:52.99 at the State Open. The quartet had recently finished in first place at the Class M State Championship with a time of 1:51.85, helping Guilford earn runner-up honors as a squad.
The Grizzlies’ 200 freestyle relay of Cheng, senior Grace Young, senior Charlotte Martocci, and sophomore Isabel Torello claimed 12th place with a time of 1:42.37 at the Open. The 400 freestyle relay featuring Cohen, Torello, Kate Young, and Grace Young posted a mark of 3:45.49 to finish in 17th place.
Guilford also saw several athletes hit the water to participate in individual events at the State Open. Cheng finished 22nd in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.14 for the Grizzlies. Cheng had previously place second in the event at the Class M State Championship with a mark of 1:01.05.
Jacobson finished 22nd in the 100 breaststroke by swimming a time of 1:10.68 for Guilford in the Open. Torello came in 23rd place for the 500 freestyle after hitting the finish line with a time of 5:29.85.
On Nov. 17, sophomore Jordyn Gould represented Guilford when she competed at the State Open Diving Championship at Middletown High School. Gould finished in 14th place with a score of 377.15 points for her 11-dive performance in the State Open diving competition. Gould had qualified for the meet by claiming first place at the Class M Diving State Championship with a school-record total of 399.95 points.
