H-K Girls’ Swimming Competes in Class S State Championship
The Haddam-Killingworth girls’ swimming and diving team was represented by several competitors when the Class S State Championship meet was hosted at Southern Connecticut State University on Nov. 15. The Cougars finished in 19th place out of 23 teams by scoring a total of 88 points at states. Weston finished in first place with a score of 782 points, while Woodland earned runner-up honors with 492 points scored in the meet.
H-K’s 200 medley relay finished in 13th place by recording a time of 2:09.45 at the Class S State Championship. The Cougars’ quartet consisted of senior Kirsten Thebeau, senior Erin Marica, sophomore Olivia Macaluso, and junior Layla Hayward.
H-K saw its 200 freestyle relay of freshman Magdalen Miller, senior Johanna Houska, sophomore Emma Sajus, and Hayward finish in 14th place with a time of 1:56.87 at states. The 400 freestyle relay featuring Miller, Houska, Marica, and Macaluso posted a time of 4:19.63 for a 15th-place performance.
Macaluso competed in a pair of individual events for the Cougars at the Class S meet. Macaluso finished 19th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:06.89 and also claimed 21st place for 100 backstroke after hitting the finish line in 1:09.25.
H-K’s swimmers had advanced to the state finals by virtue of their performances in the Class S State Qualifying meet that took place at the Cheshire Community Pool on Nov. 10. Every swimmer who finished in the top 24 of an event moved on to the championship.
H-K’s 200 medley relay of Thebeau, Marica, Macaluso, and Hayward finished in 12th place (2:07.45) at the state qualifier. The Cougars’ 200 freestyle relay of Miller, Houska, Sajus, and Hayward finished in 15th place (1:59.51); and the 400 freestyle relay of Miller, Houska, Sajus, and Macaluso also finished 15th (4:25.53) in the meet.
Macaluso also finished 19th in the 100 backstroke (1:08.35) and 20th in the 100 butterfly (1:07.92) at the Class S Qualifying. Marica finished 26th for the 500 freestyle (6:05.96) and also claimed 27th place in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.55).
Sajus took 28th place (1:12.46) in the 100 butterfly, while Houska finished 31st (1:15.17) in the 100 fly for H-K. Miller finished in 33rd place in the 500 freestyle (6:20.95) on behalf of the Cougars.
