Three Huskies’ Teams Compete in State Tourney
Boys’ Soccer
The Morgan boys’ soccer team won its first game in the Class M State Tournament before taking a loss in the second round of the draw last week. The Huskies concluded the 2022 season with an overall record of 15-5-1 while making a run to the Shoreline Conference Tournament final.
No. 9 seed Morgan started off states by claiming an 8-0 home victory over No. 24 O’Brien Tech in a first-round matchup at the Indian River Complex on Nov. 7. Freshman Jonny Gutierrez scored 3 goals for a hat trick and also had 2 assists in the win. Senior Sebastian Kadlof scored 2 goals to go with 2 assists for the Huskies.
Senior Matt Lopez netted 2 goals and had 1 assist for Morgan in the game. Freshman Jeremy Medranda had 1 goal and 1 assist to help the Huskies defeat the Condors. Junior Kolby Clifton and sophomore Cinar Yucel each contributed with an assist for Head Coach Ross Demay’s squad.
Freshman Liam Totten and junior Jack Bousquet combined for the shutout in goal for Morgan. Totten made 2 saves, and Bousquet had 3 saves in the victory.
Two days later, the Huskies played a second-round road game against Suffield and lost to the Wildcats by the final score of 2-1 in the contest. Morgan was eliminated from the tournament with the loss.
Girls’ Soccer
One week after winning its second-straight Shoreline Conference title, the Morgan girls’ soccer team opened play in the Class S State Tournament last week. The Huskies took a 1-0 loss to St. Paul in the second round of the state bracket and finished their campaign with an overall record of 12-4-3.
As the No. 6 seed in the draw, Morgan had a bye through the first round of the Class S State Tournament. On Nov. 10, Morgan hosted No. 22 seed St. Paul for a second-round game and took a 1-0 defeat to the Falcons at the Indian River Complex.
St. Paul scored the lone goal of the game in the 62nd minute on its way to the win. Junior goalie Samantha Way made 1 save in net for the Huskies in the game.
Girls’ Volleyball
The Morgan girls’ volleyball team took a loss versus Coginchaug in the first round of the Class S State Tournament last week. The Huskies finished their season with an overall record of 10-12.
On Nov. 7, the 19th-seeded Huskies hit the road to take on No. 14 seed Coginchaug for a Class S State Tournament first-round showdown. Coginchaug won the match by a 3-0 final after sweeping the contest with set scores of 25-15, 25-15, 25-23.
Senior Eva O’Sullivan dished out 15 assists to go with 6 digs and 3 kills for Morgan in its matchup against Coginchaug. Fellow senior Kacey Edwards finished the match with 18 digs and 7 kills. Senior Kendra Robayo had 4 digs and 3 kills, while junior Ainsley Corgan posted 3 kills and 3 digs.
Junior Molly Vitola punched up 10 digs for the Huskies in the match. Senior Courtney Vause recorded 9 digs, senior Amelia Whelan had 8 digs, junior Anna Fasulo tallied 6 digs, and senior Maddie O’Sullivan added 5 digs.
Football
The Morgan football team hit the gridiron to face Ellington for a home game at the Peters Complex last week. The Huskies took a 48-28 defeat against the Knights to put their overall record at 2-6 on the year. Ellington improved its overall record to 6-2 with the victory.
Morgan is hosting North Branford for a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division matchup at the Peters Complex on Friday, Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. North Branford has an overall record of 4-4 and is 2-3 in the division this year. Morgan also comes into the game with a divisional record of 2-3. After that game, the Huskies will play their annual Thanksgiving week contest versus Old Saybrook-Westbrook on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. at Old Saybrook High School.
