The Old Saybrook field hockey team defeated Valley Regional on penalty shots in the Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinals to advance to the championship game last week. The Rams were edged out by the Thunderbirds by a 1-0 score in the conference final to put their overall record at 12-5-1 as they open play in states this week.

No. 2 seed Old Saybrook began postseason play by hosting No. 3 Valley Regional in a Shoreline Conference Tournament semifinal game at the Indian River Complex in Clinton on Nov. 1. The Rams won a 1-0 decision over the Warriors in a game that was decided by a 2-1 margin on penalty shots after the two clubs were tied up following regulation and overtime.

Old Saybrook and Valley were knotted in a 0-0 deadlock upon the completion of regulation play in their Shoreline semifinal matchup. Following a pair of scoreless 10-minute overtime periods, Old Saybrook and Valley Regional went to penalty shots to decide who would advance to the final. Each team had 5 chances and scored 1 goal apiece, sending the game into a sudden-victory penalty shot session. In the second round of that session, junior Amelia Sigersmith slipped one past the Valley goalkeeper to win the game for Old Saybrook.

Berdiales was in net for every round of the penalty shot sessions. Berdiales stopped 6 of the Warriors’ 7 penalty shot attempts to help the Rams claim the dramatic victory.

Two days later, Old Saybrook faced off against top-seeded defending champion North Branford in the Shoreline title game at the Indian River Complex. North Branford claimed a 1-0 victory in the contest to win the conference crown for the sixth-consecutive season.

The Thunderbirds scored the only goal of the game during the fourth quarter and then hung on for the one-goal win over the Rams. Berdiales played the entire game in net for Old Saybrook and made 11 saves in the contest.
